what do you prefer, dimarzio or duncan pups? why do you prefer one over the other?

Re: dimarzio vs duncan

honestly these polls really do not make much sense
i like both as do many others
but IF you held a gun to my head and made me choose
it would be DUNCAN:bigok:

Re: dimarzio vs duncan

hard to decide as well, personally i have favorites from both companies. for dimarzio my absolute fav would be the Air norton, steve special and V-PAFs for duncan the JB and jazz

Re: dimarzio vs duncan

No question, it would be DiMarzio.

Much wider spectrum of tones, both "vintage" and "modern" that matches up much better in a wider variety of instrument types and configurations, IMO/IME.

I find Duncans way too similar sounding..especially among the PAF variants and the higher output pickups are irritating to get excellent lead and rhythm tones out of one amp setting, IME. That said, the ones I do care for, like the SH5 and lately the Jazz neck, I like ALOT.

Re: dimarzio vs duncan

I voted Duncan because I am more familiar with what I can get, but I do have a Tone Zone/Air Zone combo going in one guitar and a PAF Pro/Humbucker from Hell going another to try some DiMarzio.

Re: dimarzio vs duncan

i don't think too many people will argue that dimarzio makes equally as good pickups. being in the forums for a while now, i get the sense that people generally prefer dimarzio. i'm not saying i'm right, but that's the sense i get around here. my personal opinion is that neither have just the right pickup for me. they each have several that i like a lot, but nothing that i think is just right.

dimarzio definitely makes equally good pups, so do alot of other companies.
personally i think each has their own good stuff. for me, i mix and match dimarzios duncans and lace in one guitar to get tones that i like.

Re: dimarzio vs duncan

I like models from both companies. I prefer the Duncans response and feel - its more in the hands than in the ear (if that makes sense)

Re: dimarzio vs duncan

A Dimarzio vs. Duncan thread on the Duncan Forum...Jeez, I wonder what the outcome will be (I was surprised to see one vote for Dimarzio)

Duncan all the way!

Re: dimarzio vs duncan

Duncan!

On the whole, I find Duncans to be clearer than DiMarzios. I haven't tried too many DiMarzios, and I've only ever liked one (Super Distortion), but Duncans all light my candle more or less. I shy away from the higher output ones, but the Duncans I have tried all appeal to me pretty well.

Re: dimarzio vs duncan

i used to use dimarzios, then bill lawrence and lace sensors, then emgs now its basically all duncans and custom stuff

Re: dimarzio vs duncan

I've been listening alot recently in search of new tone, being an EMG guy on my strats. Yes I'm a Pink Floyd Fan, and simply could not find that DG tone anywhere else. Anyway Di'Marzios are just to hard to get hold of in the UK, let alone HEAR, befor you buy.

I'm sold on EMG, and growing into an SD fan too, if I want custom, I have the guy who builds Status Quo's pickups as my custom guy. He's already done me proud on my doubleneck.

Re: dimarzio vs duncan

i love floyd but i like gilmores older tone before the emgs

Re: dimarzio vs duncan

Both companies make great after market pickups. Based on my limited Dimarzio experience, I'd say Duncan does the vintage and vintage flavored pickups better, while Dimarzio seems to excel at producing pickups with a more modern edge.

That said, I prefer Duncans because I am more familiar with their line. I'm also not a fan of a few trademarks that Dimarzio seems to think they are entitled to.

Re: dimarzio vs duncan

It's all very, very subjective. To me, the only way you could even begin to make somewhat of a fair comparison (to find out what suits you best) would be to take a DiMarzio and a Duncan that are of fairly equal caliber, like for example, a PAF and a '59 model and take it from there. You'd have to try them out one at a time in the same guitar to see what the differances are.

But I like the products from both companies. Got a Custom Custom in my LP and Tone Zone T with a Virtual Vintage 2 Strat neck model in my Tele. Love them all, too!

Re: dimarzio vs duncan

Well considering the only dimarzio I ever bought was a brand new custom shop order and it had a dead coil, I'm a bit turned off by them.

Maybe some time in the future I'll give them a try again but I have a bit of a bad taste left in my mouth. The double whammy, drop sonic, and super 3 all interest me.

I've never had a trouble finding a good tone from a duncan. You always know a duncan will sound good, reguardless if it's the exact sound you're looking for or not. My screamin demon and invader are 2 excellent pickups that can easily play just about any style, at least with my amps.

Re: dimarzio vs duncan

Never much liked the DiMarzio's I have owned. A SUperD is kind of cool but other than that, meh. Duncan's are number one by far in my book. I like the real Bill Lawrence pups too, I recently picked up a new L500L and it is fine.

Re: dimarzio vs duncan

Ok,

I'm about to upset a load of Floyd fans, so I'm taking my comment to a different part of the Forum!
