...
Dimarzio = ...They look and feel cheap.
...
But as it stands right now the only cool things I like about dimarzios is their neat and quirky things they do for neck pickup soloing. THATS it. IE: Air Noton and Liquifire, PAF Pro for its "Aw"

What's cheap about them? Did you have any dimarzio fail under normal use? Yeah, packaging may be less fancy than more expensive pickups, but to me they seem to be well built pickups that should last a lifetime with no issues.

Agree about neck pickup soloing, my liquifire is one of the best pickups I've tried. Paf Pro I have in the other guitar is also very cool but in a completely different way.

Re: dimarzio vs duncan

what do you prefer, dimarzio or duncan pups? why do you prefer one over the other?

Duncan humbuckers have a visual appeal that DiMarzio's totally lack. The fixed and adjustable pole pieces of the Duncans are a work of art. DiMarzio pole pieces have all the charisma of pop rivets.

Re: dimarzio vs duncan

This one's old as crap wow.

SD = Master of the fundamental tone building blocks. Nothing quirky besides the ones thinking outside the box. Every area of the market is essentially covered. Pickups augment and/or dampen the fundamental tone of the guitar. But the basic guts is still there. They just drip mojo and quality.

Dimarzio = Very off the wall pickups that have niches that SD doesn't do while having some basic traditional pickups toneful pickups. Had some not really kosher business practices but IF SD thought of doing it first you know they'd be milking it. They look and feel cheap.

I'd come to SD First and whatever they didn't have go to Dimarzio.

I remember Chris Broderick(Nevermore,Jag Panzer,Megadeth) saying he wasn't to fond of Dimarzios, said they felt cheap and couldn't compete with his Sh5/Jazz setup. Then he went to Bareknuckle, then I look in a Guitar World and he's endorsing DActivators. Found that funny

that did not shock me as much as the yngwie switchover to duncans!:eyecrazy:

Re: dimarzio vs duncan

Next we are going over to the Chevy Truck forum to ask which is a better truck, Ford or Chevy. We're scientific that way.... :smack:

Re: dimarzio vs duncan

Dimarzio AND Duncan! I'm sorry , but yeah..Several of my guitars work best with BOTH!
Truth be told, I believe Duncans will give the most organic and greatest tone on a good guitar.
I'm currently switching out many of my Dimarzios for Duncans.
I think Duncan might be a bit out in the cold for certain High gain Humbucker Shred/Nu metal with Dimarzios offerings in comparison...most likely stuff like the Crunch lab.

Re: dimarzio vs duncan

FWIW, Yngwies tone is the best it has EVER been and the only real change is the seymour FURY's in his strat:naughty:

Re: dimarzio vs duncan

I tend to prefer Duncans but I have to admit that the 36th Anniversary PAFs are as good as any pickup I have ever heard.

Re: dimarzio vs duncan

I have both in my guitars. My Suhr Esquire has a Virtual T and my EBMM Silo Special has whatever Dimarzio model MM uses in the neck and middle positions. I replaced the 36th Anniversary model in the bridge of the Silo with a Duncan Invader. I really like the Invader a lot better than the 36th. Funny thing is I am not a shredder (don't even use a pick) and found the Invader to be more clear and less muted. I also have a USACG strat with Peter Florance pickups with a Duncan Quarter Pound in the bridge. I like both companies and glad we have the choices we do. I have to say that my best sounding guitar is my Suhr. If I had to choose however I would pick Duncan. Only because I have never had one that I didn't like.

Re: dimarzio vs duncan

I don't have any brand loyalty in the matter. If I were shopping, I'd explore each brand and pick the one that made the perfect pickup for the application.

Re: dimarzio vs duncan

Voted Duncans, somehow I always end up with one... recently changed my B&B 500xl for Dimebucker SH-13, besides it's easier to get second hand Seymour pickups here in Poland,

Soundwise I find Duncan's brighter than Dimarzio's, like they would have more 'presence'.
Had the Super Distortion and Evo... more low/mid focused stuff... on the other hand I have HS-2 in one of my guitars neck position...and that thing is BRIGHT, but I don't like it. There's some kind of "plastic" feel to it.

Re: dimarzio vs duncan

I think there's room for them all, but I've found DiMarzios to be kinda noisy compared to Duncans.

Re: dimarzio vs duncan

Howdy,

I like both. SD's Vintage Soapbars are fantastic in my Les Paul Sp, while DiMarzio's under-rated Twang Kings take my Mahogany Tele from Exiles on Main Street all the way to Bakersfield; love 'em.

Re: dimarzio vs duncan

I like seymour duncan because they make the pearly gates set,the best set of pickups I ever heard.I even like them better then custom shop pickups.

Re: dimarzio vs duncan

I have to tweak my opinion. on some guitars, duncans work best, but dimarzio's seem to be less picky in what guitar they go, so thats why some guitars 'need' dimarzio's. the super distortion/paf pro and air norton-set is in some guitars undefeatable.

Re: dimarzio vs duncan

For humbuckers I prefer Duncan. Love the Slash AP2's in my Paul and 59's are great too.

For Strats/Teles I do prefer the DiMarzio Area noisless and Bill Lawrence noiseless over the Duncan noiselsess pups.

Re: dimarzio vs duncan

I like both. Depends on what I'm going after.

I love the Air Classics. Got a set in my PRS SE that sound incredible there.
I've got Duncans in my frankenstrat (Screamin' Demon, Classic Stack Plus, Lil' Screamin' Demon) and love how the Demon sounds there.
Both of my Kramers have a JB.

There's so many different ways to go.

Re: dimarzio vs duncan

You are certainly in the wrong side of the world man...ha..ha...!!!

Oh well. and even 5 years later I still pretty much feel that way- There are a couple of Duncans I really do enjoy- Pearly gates for example, Seths, and the SH5 is always a fun pup if you need that output- but there are more Dimarzios I like than Duncans.

That said, I've moved on and I use neither these days.
