DiMarzio vs. Seymour Duncan

Re: DiMarzio vs. Seymour Duncan

DiMarzio's "vintage" selection is pretty bad. Even with the pickups that are supposed to be vintage, they talk about adding their own modern twist to the design. DiMarzio eschews vintage, they're all about modern. The "PAF Master" is no such thing, and they've only waded into the vintage side of the market to counter the boutique makers. They're a hair metal brand, and based on their current stable of endorsement deals, they have no intention of changing direction anytime soon.

Pretty much all brands these days have something for everyone. Blanket statements just confuse people.

Re: DiMarzio vs. Seymour Duncan

A side-by-side listing of the product lines, segmented by market/genre, would be interesting to see the balance of products available, however. I have enough interest to read that list, but not enough interest to make that list.

I think it's the opposite; pretty much every brand has sizable gaps in their product lines. Seymour Duncan has the largest selection, but it could be said they're too fixated on AlNiCo 2 and AlNiCo 5, at the expense of 3 and 4, and other magnet type possibilities. They don't have any super low output PAFs, or Strat pickups wound below 6k. All the Tele neck covers are brass only. DiMarzio offers some of these things and not others. Then there are lot of less common pickups for Rickenbackers or Gretsch guitars that are only available through the custom shop, but which some companies offer "off the shelf". I think some blanket statements are valid, you just have to take a lot into consideration.

Man, if you folks haven't got this figured out over twenty years after the fact I'm afraid you never will.

Re: DiMarzio vs. Seymour Duncan

Generally speaking, the skill in pickup upgrading is matching the qualities of any given model to the host guitar.

That's the thing. Not every pickup will work in every guitar. And even if you like a pickup in one guitar, it might not sound good in another. Because different guitars sound different. This is why the idea that all your tone comes from the pickups is very wrong.

I like some pickups from DiMarzio. I like some pickups from Duncan. I even like some from EMG. They all make good pickups. And they are all different.

Howdy,

Glad you've discovered P/Us that suit you. I like both manufacturers as well.

Yup, and let's not forget about amp settings and the amp itself which play a huge role in the sound overall. Getting a super low output PAF type pickup and running it into a Dual Rect isn't exactly gonna get you that "vintage" sound out of the box.

Playing technique too, if you pick a certain way and bend a certain way, the different pickups are designed to respond differently to that, and that's 90% of your tone. I mean, Alex Lifeson changed his rig for every album and every tour, and he still sounds like Alex Lifeson
