Dirty Fingers Review

Re: Dirty Fingers Review

DF doesn't compare to any Duncans IMO. It's a pretty unique creature.

It has a hair about it - kind of like the fizz people report on a PG's high end. But it is wayyyyy hot. In an AWESOME way. I like it a lot more than an X2N, which I think is maybe a better comparison.

The DF is nothing like any Duncan pickup. It has the hairy top end of the PG (like you said), the aggressive mids of the JB, and the strong, tight bottom end of the Custom. For how hot it is though, it always stays highly articulate. The cleans tones still have a sparkle to them, despite all the compression.

That's how people describe the X2N - Boosted lows, boosted mids, boosted highs. Lotta compression.

I agree the DF is more articulate than the X2N. For X2N cleans though, parallel is the way to go.

wonder how a DF would be be in parallel?

Re: Dirty Fingers Review

Sounds like a DD to me then. I didn't know it has the triple magnets.

So it's just a awg44 500T?

Im not 100% sure if it's awg44 or not.....

But both the DF and the 500T both have 3 ceramics. A large ceramic in the middle (like the duncan distortion and 500T) and two smaller ceramics on the both sides (like the 500T). It is a little hotter than the 500T, more aggressive, and more articulate. The DF also seems to react more like a single coil than a humbucker in terms of pick attack response, sensitivity and articulation.

Thanks guys! The dude's a gunslinger alright!

I know Sykes switched to 57 Classics at some point.

Also, how hot are the Fingers? I have a PRS Dragon bridge pickup - ceramic that is hot but has GREAT clean tones especially split!

Dirty Fingers are very hot, with a lot fang and presence that refuses to get dialed out with the volume control. They are very "crowded" in the top-end, and chock full of metal/thrash/punk. Harmonics and other wild tones literally fall out of the guitar and shatter on the floor. These are not pickups for people who want complete control under gain, although it looks like a guy like Sykes with so much talent can do it better than most.

I think the neck model of the original DF is more versatile. It has a different k-Ohm wind. It has the same elevated "ego", but it is far less obnoxious.

I would recommend 300K pots with DF's.

I have a set of split-able DF's, and I never found the split tone to be anything to brag about.

It's all in the players fingers. I have no problems with control under high gain with the DF.

Re: Dirty Fingers Review

Very true. What sounds like trash to one player, might sound great to another.

Indeed! I hardly know shiz. I was used to using a DF's, a Sunn model T, and an overdrive pedal for years.

It got to the point I needed more preamp gain. The difference between an early/mid Tony Iommi tone, and a Jerry Cantrell tone is HUGE!

The DF's just didn't track that well with my vision of a huge preamped tone. What is odd, is how well it did for low gain, but I suppose they were designed in the era of lower gain.

Thank God, I had an amp that had enough nutsticles (a Sunn) to bring up the ass end of my tone.

It first came out in the last 70's/early 80's. It were not so popular when they came out, but became VERY popular with Hard Rock and Metal players in the mid - late 80's. The top 2 players that I can think of off the top of my head that used these in the 80's with JCM 800's were John Sykes (whitesnake), and Steve Clark (Def Leppard).

Re: Dirty Fingers Review

How about feedback with the DF? Is it a problem and when it goes into feedback is it harmonic or just random?

Its potted pretty well. I dont have any problem with feedback at random. But if Im trying to get feedback by standing close to my cabnet, I can. It make all kinds of funny sounds
