DirtyFingers vs Distortion or.....??

I got a Gibson V. At first I loved the Dirty fingers that came in it. However, Im not getting the tone from them that I want.
Can anyone tell me the dif tween the DF and a Duncan Distortion? I wanna keep hot pups in this axe. But the DF bridge seems to be very mid focused.. What do you recommend for a Gibson V?

Re: DirtyFingers vs Distortion or.....??

Is it a new or old df? I've only played older ones so that's all I can comment on. For lack of a better word I would say the distortion is a little drier, and it has probably a bit more clarity. The df might be a little beefier and from what I remember had a bit more sing comparatively but again that was judging by an old one not the current production. The distortion is plenty hot, so don't even worry about that part. Have you also looked at the black winters, or even the blackouts?

Re: DirtyFingers vs Distortion or.....??

The DF are new. Dont want to go active, but have been seriously considering a set of Black Winters for one of my projects..

Re: DirtyFingers vs Distortion or.....??

I agree with Joey, the DF is a very full-bodied pup with strong mids and, as the name says, it is "dirty". Difficult to get good clean tones from it. But it is a beautiful sounding pup. The Dist is more scooped and has more jangly highs so it cleans up much better. However, the highs have that typical ceramic mag brittleness to them. I personally prefer the Dist with an A2 mag which warms it up a bit for more pleasing leads.

Black Winters are great pickups for a lot of different things. But active is one thing they are not.

I think he knows, he just mentioned it because both the blackouts and black winters were two models I suggested above.

OK - crazy Question: What tone do you want?

Re: DirtyFingers vs Distortion or.....??

You want either a Distortion, or a Gibson 500t. Lots of thump and sizzle.

Ok, will try this a forth time.. My comp keeps crashing or I get busy (im at work) and I get timed out and lose the whole %#$%$* response.
Anyhow.. I said I dont mean to be difficult, but not really sure.. Most vets round here know I love 80s metal.. So, wanna cover that and 70srock. I know the Dirty Fingers should do the trick, but they just arent tripping my trigger. I DO KNOW that 90% of the problem is me and my lack of ablility.. But, I do know when I hear sounds I like and when it isnt moving me... Been working with the height adjustment last few times Ive played. I have a Custom 8 in my Explorer and love it. But was thinking of keeping this V on a hot side.

Hmm.. I have a 500t that came out of my explorer, but it seems to be dead.. : (

The distortion will definitely do 80's metal but so will a jb and a dimarzio super/super3. The super/super3 aren't as crispy on the high end. An older Jackson j90c may be another one to try to track down, but find one with the adjustable poles that protrude from the bottom of the base plate. If you want something a little different, I think the alternative 8 is good for that music too. It's probably my favorite Duncan

I think I have a Jackson J90 or two laying around, but I pulled em from my Charvels as they were bland to my ears..

Hmmm. Alt 8. keep forgetting about that one. I actually put one in one of my Charvels in place of the J90. Sadly, I had to sell the guitar and the buyer wanted the Alt 8 intact. It was pretty awesome from what I remember...

Re: DirtyFingers vs Distortion or.....??

The Alt8 is one very heavy pickup. I would put it easily in the same league as the JB, Distortion, even the Dimebucker. Very good for low tunings too.

Re: DirtyFingers vs Distortion or.....??

Was it a 90 or a 90c? The 90c is ceramic where as the 90 is a5 so they do have a bit of difference.

Have NO idea bro.... Would have to reclaim it from the mothballs.. : ) But, Ill make a note next time I cross its path...

Re: DirtyFingers vs Distortion or.....??

Yeah, prolly. Im quite ticked the one I have seems to be dead.. It wasnt used much, pulled and has been gently stored since then.. I dunno... I remember it ripped in the explorer. but, since my chops arent tight, I had alil trouble controlling the beast..
I was really hoping the Dirty Fingers would trip my trigger.

I want something hot and big sounding..

For hot and big, I would consider the Dimarzio Super, or Super 3. The Duncan invader might be another option.
