distortion pedal on dirty channel

What happens if you use a distortion pedal on the dirty channel of the amp? I dont use effects much and I was just curious about this. Thanks.

Re: distortion pedal on dirty channel

Boosts the gain up, can add a nice coating to the tone. It really depends on what amp/pedals you're running.

Re: distortion pedal on dirty channel

If you got a more modern Marshall (TSL, DSL, JCM 900) with the dirty channel with a good amount of gain and then a gain-dimed metal zone in front of it, its going to sound like mush. What the trick is to that is either getting a slightly dirty amp and putting an overdrive pedal in front that will push the amp into clipping (pedal should have high volume and medium gain levels). Or you can put a crunch/overdriving amp with a tube screamer type pedal that can boost the signal for solos. And as mentioned, give a slight different color to your tone.

Re: distortion pedal on dirty channel

With distortion pedals on dirty channel setting the pedal at a high volume and low gain can give you that signal boost for solos similar to what was mentioned with the overdrive pedals. Basically if you add a distortion pedal on I would consider it as an extra channel like on your amp. One thing is that you should try to not keep the pedal gain up high as it can make your amp sound generic as it would sound similar to other amps, but still have some coloring of your amp.

when i was using my old 2205 half stack i used a boss sd1 for my lead boost, gain at 11 o'clock volume maxed out. great lead tone, can be a little mushy for fast rhythm
