Do pedals need their own forum?

Re: Do pedals need their own forum?

We also need a separate forum for hot babe threads.

I like this idea. I think it should be a sub-forum of the off-topic room, invisible unless you're a forum member and logged in. Let's give it another level of secrecy: There's a box in your user preferences that you check or uncheck to indicate whether you want to see it or not. That way if you're not interested, you can opt out. Guys, we need to get this going. My first thread is going to be Alexandra Breckenridge.

Re: Do pedals need their own forum?

There already is a separate place for hot babe discussions. Lucid runs it!

How fragmented do yez wanna get? At this rate, we'll end up with a discreet room just for Aceman's weekend threads. One with padded walls and a lock on the door, perhaps. ;)

No, we need a relatively public, well-traveled place for PG and PG-13 hot babes. What goes on in other places is… for other places.

If we do this we can start getting a little more into my wheelhouse; sickeningly perverse fetish photography.

That's what the physics-defying private groups are for. I want a babe room you can review while you're eating.

No no no. Only real babes. No trannies or deviant stuff allowed.

Re: Do pedals need their own forum?

Ever visit a forum with a bajillion subgroups? This place doesn't move quickly enough to justify another subdivision IMO. There are still threads on the front page of Amplifier Central from 3 days ago. As most players will be interested in both pedals and amps it's more convenient the way it is.

I agree. Another forum I frequent expanded and got carried away (separate forums for tube, solid state, and modelling amps). I think the current set up works.

Re: Do pedals need their own forum?

If we made a separate pedal subforum, the threads actually about amplifiers would not get nearly as much traffic. This place moves slow enough that they should stay together to keep traffic going.

Re: Do pedals need their own forum?

I thought of it because when I'm only interested in amp discussions, I have to wade past 25 threads about pedals to find the amp threads in between. I think it's cool there's plenty of pedal traffic and there's times I want to catch up on them, it's just a bit of an obstacle if it's not what you're looking for. Feels like spam in the inbox if it's not what you're after.

Since the Bassment isn't very active, should it go the other way and put all the bass stuff into the Guitar Shop?

Re: Do pedals need their own forum?

The Bassroom came about only reletively recently off the back of one of these campaigns for a seperate room. It had been requested on more than one occasion and the Admins felt that we'd give it at try this time round. The traffic there hasn't exactly been frenetic and I would expect that it would be something similar if we split up the Amp Room into seperate amp and pedal rooms.

I disagree. There were very few bass topics in the guitar subforum in the first place. Here there's plenty of pedal threads and amp threads. It's more along the lines if people were asking for a new subforum for preamps. Those are about as popular as bass guitars. :D

(For the record, I like preamps and basses.)

I'll add my name to the list.

Re: Do pedals need their own forum?

To add to the discussion, SD *does* make pedals.

Re: Do pedals need their own forum?

Separate forum.

Of all the guitar and car forums I've frequented over the years, SD has the highest post frequency and the fewest sub forums, in my unscientific observation. The sub forums almost fit on one main page...lol...and would if they didn't have descriptions under each title. It's as far extreme, the other way, as those sites with so many sub-forums it makes your eyes blur.

While it's nice to have an uncluttered main page, adding one more couldn't possibly strain one's ability to navigate here.

And pedals are obviously not amps, and both get enough volume to deserve their own sub forums.

Arguing about this type of stuff reminds me of IT trying to convince users to let go of the ingrained patterns over the less than ideal solutions they've grown to rely on; change is hard on some people, and it's amazing what some will go through to justify staying the course (been there myself).

I'm not sure that's true; this place has become the de facto Effects forum because there isn't one. There is something to be said for separating subject matter. Pedals, though some have similar circuitry, are a very different animal from amplifiers, and while both are significant parts of your signal chain, so's your instrument, and we have a separate forum for that (heck, we have a forum just for pickups, because this is Seymour Duncan's house; most other guitar-oriented forums don't go that far).

GearSlutz is actually a pretty good example of how bad it can get when you go the other way; they do have a lot of forums, but the majority are for the site's primary focus, studio and recording gear, and most of their divisions are along budgetary and industry lines. There is one forum for all things guitar and bass, from instruments to pickups and electronics to pedals, amplifiers, and speakers. If you're looking specifically for acoustic guitar resources, good luck; they're peppered in along with everything else.

I think an Effects forum wouldn't be out of place here, especially since SD makes a few themselves.
