Not really bothered if there's one on there or not. Doesn't affect the tone in any way, if anything any loose screws or whatnot cause rattling sounds which is annoying. And I like a bit of pick powder damage on the guitar, makes it look like its being used as I'm not a guitar collector!

I am a very light player, so my pickguards still look new. The guitars without them are not scrathed either, because I simply don't ever go near the wood with my pick or my nails. Besides, a 20 year old guitar should have some wear. It is a tool, after all.
