There are endorsements that last for 30 years, proving the artist likes the gear, and there are endorsements that done for different reasons.

Iommi has been playing Laney amps a long time. Pretty safe thinking he plays them because he likes them. In today's world some endorsements are done just because they give the artist the gear. There are a few prominent guitarists who are doing this.

Anyway, I am drawn to the Jackson Rhoads because of Randy.

Re: do you buy your gear cause an artist endorsed it?

Ehhh... kinda. I wanted to buy the Noel Gallagher signature, but that's because I want to play the same kind of music that he does! I got my axe because many bands I like use it, and I like getting those kinds of sounds....

Re: do you buy your gear cause an artist endorsed it?

I want to buy the 535Q Crybaby because if it's good enough for any other bigshot players, then it must be good enough for any other regular joe.

I got a V because it was an awesome first electric, the price was right, and plus it had the classic rock 'n roll attitude. Plus I was really into early Metallica at the time.

I got a Double Drive because.. actually, the only reason I got it was because it was $80 LESS than a new one. You read right, they took $80 off because it was used for.. a week?

And I want a single-cut guitar with a Floyd, mostly because I love the look of any single-cut, and Floyd Rose's are the only kind of trem I'd use, unless I was playing a 60's SG or Firebird.

yea evh comes to mind, how many amps and axes has he endoresed over the years....tony iommi has always been a laney partisan

Re: do you buy your gear cause an artist endorsed it?

No i don't boy because ONE person endorses them. But like i bought my Les Paul because all of the greatest guitarists at least own one.

Re: do you buy your gear cause an artist endorsed it?

To be perfectly honest, I'd love to have a Custom Shop BC Rich Stealth in honor of Chuck.

Re: do you buy your gear cause an artist endorsed it?

In my case I'm always intrigued by signature gear and give it a go, but most of it is too idiosyncratic to take home.

Re: do you buy your gear cause an artist endorsed it?

There is also some gear that isn't as it seems. Case in point, the Screamin' Demon. Years ago when I installed it, I thought it would be a higher-output pickup. Not so, it was/is a bit stronger than a PAF, just EQ'd for bass, a growl as they explain it.

Now when people first realize this they get down on the Demon, as I did. But, taken for what it is, it is still a pretty good pickup, worth a second look. You would just need to run a boost, like George did.

Re: do you buy your gear cause an artist endorsed it?

I bought the Screamin' Demon as a teenager after seeing some of the write-ups about it, but I didn't know Lynch's music then...liked the sound of the pickup though.

Re the endorsers, sometimes it's just been about brand or product awareness. It's raised my awareness of products that I hadn't thought about before and later ended up quite liking.

Re: do you buy your gear cause an artist endorsed it?

nope although I have a prs se with tremonti's name on it.
I bought it because I was in the market for a thin body les paul shaped guitar and also partially due to the fact that the singlecut prs have been discontinued due to the lawsuit.

Re: do you buy your gear cause an artist endorsed it?

i have bought one one piece of signature gear.... a 5150 stack... great amp for that huge bassy high gain sound!

Re: do you buy your gear cause an artist endorsed it?

That is a really good topic for discussion. One that is almost political in nature because everyone has such strong opinions on their equipment choices. I might step on some toes, but here it goes:

The big name manufacturers (Fender, Gibson, Ibanez, Marshal, etc.) send their products free of charge to many, many high profile artists. They do it with the agreement that the artist use their product (even if they don't like it) for a period of time. This is their way of advertising to the peons like me, who, go out and buy the equipment because of the big name artist using it. I would be willing to bet good money that Vai, Van Halen, Beck, Clapton, etc. have never spent their own money on a guitar in quite some time.

When I was younger, I did buy alot of equipment because of who used it...then one day I read an article in Guitar Player (or some similar mag) that most signed bands don't even buy most of their guitars/amps. It made me so angry that, for a while, I put a piece of duct tape over the "Fender" logo of my geetar. (I can hear you laughing from here) I also got out a little bitty screw driver and took the name-plate off my amp. The way I figured it, Fender never did anything for me...so why the ?*!# should I give them advertising. Of course, it didn't matter because no one cared what I played anyway.

Well, I've mellowed since then. I am no longer an angy youth. Hell, I even bought another Fender amp. :blackeye:

Re: do you buy your gear cause an artist endorsed it?

I've really thought this one through and I can't really think of one piece of gear I've bought due to an artist endorsement.

I've bought a buttload of gear based on stuff you guys have recommended though....

Re: do you buy your gear cause an artist endorsed it?

Nothing huge. Tried a few pickups because guys use them and stuff.

Re: do you buy your gear cause an artist endorsed it?

im not really into signature gear, but ya ive become more interested ina certain brand if alot of my fav artists use that particular brand.

Re: do you buy your gear cause an artist endorsed it?

I don't have any signature gear, but if I'm being honest, I would have bought an Iron Maiden Strat when they first came round, but I wasn't a guitar player then.

Stupid limited edition models.

Re: do you buy your gear cause an artist endorsed it?

As for me, I was into Japanese guitars, like Yamaha Pacifica and Ibanez. Until I saw Slash performed live with his LP goldtop, I took a turn to getting LPs

haha .. thinking back, I would've invested in Yamaha Pacifica USA2 if I didn't know about GnR

The reason i bought the same amp is coz i saw it in a shop, tried it out, happened to sound great, took it home and only then did i realise the TI stood for Tony Iommi, a closer look reaveled the tiny signiture in the bottom right.

Had i known it was a Tony Iommi sig amp, i probably would have been less inclined to try it out.

Thanks god i didn't know.

Re: do you buy your gear cause an artist endorsed it?

Well, when Michael Wiltons ESP Sig Guitar comes out, that will be first on my list.

I will not deny that I'm more fond of the association with such an incredible guitar player that it compensates for any weird looks I might get because of what it looks like (skull and crossbones logos tiled).
