Just wondering how alone I am in the world of guitar...and to see if the lack of good left handed instruments at the local store is warranted. I have been told right to my face that "my kind" are not in sufficient numbers to really care about from a business perspective...is this true (I can take the truth...but I like data)?

Re: Do you play guitar left-handed?

Yup, that's me. All I'll say is I have more left-handed guitars than any of my mates have right-handed ones - Collectively!

They all believe in rationalisation. I say they don't understand wood, pups and tone combinations.

Re: Do you play guitar left-handed?

Righty.

My best friend is left handed, but plays the guitar like a righty. My sister is a lefty and has expressed interest in getting an acoustic for her classes (she is a music teacher)... I've told her the choice is ultimately hers, but have suggested that a right handed guitar would afford her more options down the road.

Nothing against lefties, but I pity your selection of guitars.

I'm in the same boat, because if I find a good one, I will do just about anything to get it because I may never see another good one again (so far, my wife is understanding...so far...). I still regret the 335 that got away...and I have never seen another one since then (in person).

Re: Do you play guitar left-handed?

I'm southpaw now as well. I've got so many Kramer projects going on it will be awhile before I start buying anything else but maybe an Edwards LP custom.

Re: Do you play guitar left-handed?

I'm a lefty, but I play guitar right handed. A wise man who was also a southpaw once told me to play right handed b/c that way your dominant hand is also your fretting hand. I have to agree especially since playing left handed feels really unnatural to me just like writing right handed does.

If you can afford it, find a good luthier and go custom, man. ***** them all.;)

I have the luck to be righty but I'd go custom as well.

Re: Do you play guitar left-handed?

i tired lefty in my earlier years of playing because my more dextrous hand would be the fretting one. but it felt wierd so i stuck to righty.

I am actually right handed, so I know what you mean. But because of circumstances beyond my control, I'm compelled to play left handed or not at all. Of course, this makes me even more pssed off regarding the guitar selection for lefties, because I had no choice in the matter. I would agree with an earlier post to suggest beginners should learn right handed, regardless of their handedness.

You know, I think the wise man might be right, and that us "right-handed" players may have it backwards. We should be fretting with our dominant hand, as that's where the most precision & dexerity is needed. Learning to fret with our left hands is unnatural at first; we don't do anything else that complex with our weak hand.

Re: Do you play guitar left-handed?

Well I have a friend who is left handed and while he doesn't have the best choice in guitars he still has a 66' Original Lefty Mustang which is pretty cool and his mexican tele aint bad. But he also has the skill to be able to play a right handed guitar upside down without changing the strings and get actual music to come out of it (playing upside down with low E closest to your leg) which is an added bonus.

Re: Do you play guitar left-handed?

I'm a lefty playing righty too! Got a deal on a strat i couldn't pass up, so here i am.

I am still torn on the dominant hand doing the fretting tho. Do you guys find that your right hand tends to follow your left? if i don't work at it, i tend to sound very mechanical and undymanic.

maybe it's just me.

probably.

Just practice more, that's all I can say. Eventually it just becomes "natural." I notice when I have breaks from playing, it comes back, but quickly disappears with more practice. All I know is that when I started out, lefty felt more unnatural/uncomfortable than righty, so here I am.

Re: Do you play guitar left-handed?

lefty, weird though i never thought about the fretting with my dominant hand, I just think that picking with you non-dominant hand wouldn't be as controlled, I feel good picking with my dominant, seems like I have control of the guitar. I just think its a bonus that I found something useful for my right hand (fretting) lol.

Re: Do you play guitar left-handed?

I play lefty, but my dominant hand is right. I share that trait with Jimi Hendrix (as well as a couple other people here I see).

Re: Do you play guitar left-handed?

I'm right-handed, but I play left-handed. So, yeah, dominant hand as fretting hand. And, also circumstances beyond my control: I was born with short fingers - the top halves of my index and middle fingers aren't there. Made it tricky to learn how to hold a pick, at first, but my left-handed technique is coming along. :)

Re: Do you play guitar left-handed?

I find that the right hand requires WAY more dexterity to play properly when playing right handed.

The right hand action is very much like writing.

The left hand might be a bit challenging to get used to, but come on. After about a year of playing for most of us, we had no problems slogging it around the fretboard. The real artistry of playing imo is in the right hand's ability.

Ironically for lead - ALL my dexterity is in my RIGHT hand, so I play LEFT.

Guess I'm your complete opposite.
