Do you tip your guitar tech?

If you get pickups installed professionally, do you tip the guitar tech?

I definitely do not, it already costs an arm and a leg. If they do well, then I will keep comng back to them, that's about it.

i did one time back when i was a monkey who didn't know solder from an iron

edit: that was only because something got disconnected in my guitar and he said he'd fix it for free though.

Meh I do my own swaps....and considering what I'm paying him for fret levels and nut work (which is the only stuff he does for me, with the occasional amp work) I think he don't need no tip from moi.

Plus, he owns tons of cool gear (all original beat to death '55 Tele anyone?) so he should be giving me free stuff lol!

I tipped the gentleman who put in my machine screw inserts by buying him a new set of screwdivers... simply because they were stainless inserts, a nightmare to put in, and ruined some of his drivers. I felt bad that they were so hard to get in they did that.

Seriously, who here has a "tech"? "The guy at GC who swaps pickups" isn't my idea of "my tech".

"My tech" would be MY TECH, not some slouch avoiding a real job by hanging out 3 days a month at the local dealer.

Between the diagrams available on this site and the fact that a decent soldering iron kit costs about $50, I would recommend just learning how to do basic stuff and save yourself an arm and a leg.

If it's something permanent that you don't feel comfortable monkeying with [i.e. leveling/crowning frets] - find a reputable tech [NOT the 19-yr-old at Guitar Center] and pay what they ask. Usually a tip is not necessary - they build in enough profit margin in their hourly rate to take care of themselves.

I have thought about this from time to time, but I have never tipped a guitar tech.

One time, someone did some work on the spot and did'nt charge me so I threw him a 20 spot which he refused to accept.

It never occurred to me that, on top of paying $90 for a set-up and a bone nut, or a set-up of a guitar with a floating trem, that I should tip the tech on top of it. Is that wrong?

I've been to a tech once to get my lil59 installed a few years ago. No tip.

I hate giving tips, to anyone, period. I have a hard time understanding why I should pay someone extra for doing their job. Do you tip your garbageman? What about the salesclerk in the clothing store?

I'll probably never understand the whole thing unless I start waiting on people. But then I think it's a matter of getting a tip and being angry at everyone else who doesn't. What would the world be like if we never started tipping in the first place?

Ignore me, I get heated up when the topic is tipping people.

$90 for a setup with a new nut, yeah. Or just a setup with a floating Floyd.

So I shouldn't feel bad about not tipping? They're really good at what they do, and I'm happy to pay what they're asking.
