Does anyone know anything about relicing?

Re: Does anyone know anything about relicing?

So I don't like that this was done to my American Deluxe/Select Strat, but apparently the guitar was returned to the factory for this by the previous owner (take it with a grain of salt; I don't live far from Corona though, and the job is pretty "complete" with acid-etched bridge/hardware, rusty screws etc.)

This is on urethane:

Yeah, I'm not quite sure I believe that. He sent the guitar back to the factory for them to do a level of relicing consistent with about 5 years of regular playing? Sure he did. It does look nice though, I always prefer an "underdone" relic than overdone. This is at the very most as far as I'd be willing to go with it:

Re: Does anyone know anything about relicing?

Relicing? Is that like the opposite of using A-200? I'd leave the guitar on a playground with a bunch of dirty-ass kids, in that case.

Re: Does anyone know anything about relicing?

No offense but just let it go man

I went through this phase

I think we all have

It won’t turn out the way you envision it

And you might regret it later.

Re: Does anyone know anything about relicing?

There isn't a single good thread on the whole internet about how to properly relic a guitar, and the same goes for YouTube videos. The only good YouTube video on the subject is for a guy who wants to make the guitar look like it's only about 20 years old, I'm looking to make my guitar in question look like it's been a workhorse since the 80s.

Any tips, tricks, or methods that any of you particularly like?

My method has always been:
1. Buy guitar
2. Play ass off
3. Wait 20 years

Re: Does anyone know anything about relicing?

^ With Poly that last one is more like wait 50 years. I have a 60's guitar with poly and its barely looking used.

Would you wait 20 years to have a colour you liked for example

Buy a different color then.

Re: Does anyone know anything about relicing?

Hey talking about Poly etc, what's your take on acrylic paints and clear coats? I tried one on my strat and it feels tough.

Re: Does anyone know anything about relicing?

The satin nitro finish on my Strat has definitely led to an accelerated relic process. Chips, dents, dings, paint wear etc. Its 15 years old but looks 30...

Play harder? Play in seedier bars?

Re: Does anyone know anything about relicing?

I just play the hell out of some of my guitars, and some of them show it. The ones that get played less, look more new.

Exactly my point. Buy the aesthetic/ look you like right from the word go.....especially when that look is unlikely to be achieved by buying something that will never be realised any other way

On the other hand a urethane guitar wouldn't wear as pictured naturally either. I recall it was a "my friend works at Fender" scenario. There are Fender relics with about the same level of wear.

Again I don't think I believe my guitar went back to Fender but it isn't totally infeasible. I got a better deal out of the guy for telling him I just thought it was beat and ugly.
