Does anyone know for sure? Effects on Bark at the moon solo?

That dang bark at the moon solo... its still gets me going! I can't play it, nor have I learned any of it, but my ears are constantly drawn to that great tonality.
I can't really tell what effects he is using there....

I've been searching the net like a good boy, but people still argue over it....

Some say flanger

Some say flanger and wah....

Some say he never uses a wah...

Most argue its a Phaser

I think sometimes I am hearing an envelope filter and a phaser ?? ??

Anyone know for sure?? Like were you there and saw his rig, or know his tech or something? There are lots of guys who know people on this forum....

Thanks.

here's your reference material, what say you?
@2:01 and 3:45

Re: Does anyone know for sure? Effects on Bark at the moon solo?

I always thought it was that thing where the track is duplicated and then pitch corrected behind the original to get a phaser/chorusy effect. I'm probably wrong though.

Whatever it is, it's not beating you over the head with its effect.

Unfortunately, all I have are the garbage speakers at work to listen on, so I'm not helpful right now.

Re: Does anyone know for sure? Effects on Bark at the moon solo?

My guess is that at 2:01 he's just using the neck pickup through the Marshall, and at 3:45 there is some chorus and delay, but very light.

Re: Does anyone know for sure? Effects on Bark at the moon solo?

Nothing to debate or argue over, it's a Boss BF-2 flanger for sure. Jake never used a wah with Ozzy and never had a phaser then either, he was all about the flanger back then. The settings on the BF-2 are Manual 1 o'clock, Depth 1 o'clock, Rate 11 o'clock, Res 11 o'clock. I have pictures of his pedal boards from the Ozzy days and that's how his BF-2 is set and because of that it's the way my BF-2 is set since I love Jake's flanger tone.

Re: Does anyone know for sure? Effects on Bark at the moon solo?

Here's his board from the Ultimate Sin tour in 1986. Same BF-2 flanger with the same settings as in the 1984 Bark tour pedalboard pics but a few other pedals added (more delays) for the Sin tour. I have a Bark tour pedalboard pics from the same magazine but I'd have to scan it. He also still only has a flanger on his board for Red Dragon Cartel which he uses for BATM among other things. Although he changed to a yellow Ibanez Swell Flanger from the BF-2 now.

Re: Does anyone know for sure? Effects on Bark at the moon solo?

^^^ That Boss OD-1 is the biggest part of his tone. That's what I had back in the late 80's, boosting the gain on Marshalls.......and pretty much every Marshall man of tonal distinction. Honestly, most players thought Jake should have ditched that Flanger, since he had that pedal on almost all the time. It sounded cool on some parts like the Bark at the Moon solo, but his rhythms always sounded washed out because of it.

Even though I still like Bogners a lot, I'm starting to get into my JCM800's, and this time I don't have an OD-1, and finding that I really dig the MXR Classic OD, TS808HW, Green Rhino, and T Rex Moller......stuff I would have loved back in the day when I thought the OD-1 was a tiny bit thin.

I always thought he was just barely using a wah pedal, and maybe a tad of phaser.

Yeah, he used the OD-1 all the way through the Badlands days too. With Badlands the other secret weapon for more gain along with the OD-1 was a Kasha quickmod that added another 12AX7 tube gain stage to his JMP and JCM800 which were his main amps then. Really need to get one of them for my JMP. Every player is associated with a pedal or two that they may use a bit too much and Jake was certainly associated with the BF-2 flanger. The track I always think of isn't BATM though, it's Slow Down. I like the flanger use on the intro and before the solo on that track.

If you go to yootoob and find the isolated guitar tracks, its quite clear exactly what the effect is..

And XSSIVE I knew would be delivering the goods and pics.

The MXR Classic OD is an amazing pedal, and I didn't pay more than $30 for any of the three I have. I've got 2 on my board (set differently) and a third one as a backup (you never know).

Re: Does anyone know for sure? Effects on Bark at the moon solo?

Xssive FTW!

I will say, there is a goodly amount of string 'English" in Jake's playing as well. He light touches sometimes, and throttles them others…

Yeah, we all bought those several years ago when GC was using those as a door buster for $30. It turns out they're great OD pedals. I have the green and cream one, and modded both with nothing but a green LED, and switched my cream one over to Zakk Wylde mode.

If you like those pedals, you'll really like the Way Huge Green Rhino. That is a great pedal, particularly because of the 100Hz knob. It's basically a Tube Screamer with thicker mids and the ability to make it fatter than any other Tube Screamer. However, it can be overwhelming on some amps or fat sounding guitars.

As far as flangers, I hardly use them, but I've got a '78 ADA Flanger and a mid 90's Fulltone Choralflange, which has both a chorus and flanger than sound great.

Re: Does anyone know for sure? Effects on Bark at the moon solo?

Glad to help. I'm a bit of a nerd with Jake facts since he's my favorite guitarist.

Green Rhino, best screamer based OD ever. I've tried, owned and built more screamers than I care to remember from absurdly over priced Landgraff and Rockbox ones to stripped down bare bones no buffer versions built with overpriced "mojo" components and while they're all cool the problem is none of them give you full control over the bass (100Hz) and mids (curve) like the Rhino does. So you're not stuck picking cap values to adjust those things you can really fine tune it based on the rig and the guitar(s). I have one in the pedal drawer of my rack now and am tempted to buy a second and rehouse them into a 1U rack enclosure. Actually if I could figure out a way to midi switch them I'd put three in a rack enclosure, two for boosting already gainy preamps with different settings each and one as a low gain drive for the clean channel.

Re: Does anyone know for sure? Effects on Bark at the moon solo?

Really? I thought it was Blackouts into a BBE Green Screamer into a Blackstar Series One 200.... :laugh2::outahere:
