Does anyone tune...

Re: Does anyone tune...

EADGCF tuning is what Mike Rutherford of Genesis used for many years. Parallel fourths is also Classic Tuning for the Melody strings of a Chapman Stick.

Re: Does anyone tune...

I was talking about a whole note or so up. I didn't consider a capo because you would lose frets, 19 would go down to 17. it was just my question of the day

I've probably gone above the 17th fret a total of about 10 times in my entire life, so losing two frets to a capo isn't a real concern for me.

If I reeeeaaally needed to get notes that high for just a song or two, I'd probably use a Whammy or other pitch shifter.

My string tension is already right where I want it. Tuning up would be super annoying, and unnecessary.

Does anyone tune... On occasion.

I've tried quarter/half step up, and it didn't really do much for me.

As far as Metallica tuning goes...

KeA: All standard
RtL: Standard, with Bells tuned up a quarter step
MoP: Standrad, with The Thing that Should Not Be in Drop D, DADGBE
AJFA: All standard
Black: Standard, Sad but True is down one whole step, The God that Failed and Don't Tread on Me are down 1/2 step
Load: All half step down from standard
Reload: Half step down, Devil's Dance to D Standard, Bad Seed is down 1 1/2 step down from standard to C#
St. Anger: Drop C (CGCFAD), Dirty Window is a half step up from that at Drop C#, Invisible Kid is Drop G#
DM: Standard, with All Nightmare Long in Drop D

They started playing half step down live after Load to keep up with James' voice.

Re: Does anyone tune...

e tuned up to F standard and I loved it. I'd use it more but I'd prefer to keep all of my guitars in one tuning.

what gauge of strings do you use to tune up a step? I'd be afraid the strings would snap if I looked at 'em wrong, much less if I bent them tuned up that high!

Re: Does anyone tune...

Capo unless I'm tuning up semi-tones to match a recording... The string tension stays the same with a capo no matter where you place it.... Tuning up adds string tension and should be done cautiously, and in some cases require a new setup...

Re: Does anyone tune...

You don't lose any high notes when you capo. The rest of the fretboard is exactly the same as you're used to. You lose the notes lower than the key you're capo'd in. Duh.

Re: Does anyone tune...

No. It freaks me out.

One of my favorite songs is tuned up a whole step though.. Still Ill by The Smiths.
