Does EVH....

The bridge pickup in a guitar using a single bridge pickup often sounds better than the same bridge pickup in a guitar using a neck and bridge pickup. That's why alot of guys like Esquires better than Teles...the magnets in the neck pickup of a Strat or Tele chokes the strings and affects the sustain and intonation slightly. As far as EVH goes, Erik is right...no coil splitting.

HEY! thats what I heard when I decided to build my own custom guitar.
I actually emailed back and forth a few times with the guys here at Duncan and decided to go with a detonator in the bridge, nothin under neck, ONE volume, and NO tone pot. . . . I have been really impressed so by the sound so far. Not necessarily with my own handiwork, but the sound is good.

Re: Does EVH....

The other thing about using a single pickup is that the tone settings we use on our amp are usually a bit of a compromise because we're trying to make both a neck pickup and bridge pickup sound "good". With just a bridge pickup we can dial in one KILLER tone and nail it. Lew

That was Ed's reasoning for using one pickup, pretty much verbatim. Also, he did not add a neck pickup to the red & white stripey guitar. It was already there, but he chose not to connect it.

:D

Going off on a slight tangent... what about sending the neck and bridge pickups to two separate outputs, each feeding a seperate amplifier? The neck could go to a crunchy Bassman or Sunn, the bridge to a gain-laden JCM 800 or Dual Rectifier...

That's the concept behind the stereo guitars Gibson makes...like the ES-345 or 355.

As far as I know he's always played full HB's, no splitting or phasing. His reasoning for having just a bridge pickup in the beginning was because he couldn't find a perfect enough match for the bridge. That's what I read in an old Guitar mag interview anyway.

Is this Erik from Music World in Sunnyvale???

Dude, this is Johnny!!!

Drop me a line at rampantsounds@yahoo.com when you can, brother!!!
