Does wood make a difference?

Re: Does wood make a difference?

Would love to see a wood stand......could do something funky and Ikea-ish

Re: Does wood make a difference?

Yeah i want to experiment with alternate materials one day,
You could try some plastic wood .

Re: Does wood make a difference?

One of the original design goals of the Flying V was it didn't need a stand. Just saying.

Does any guitar really need a stand? After a while you just start tossing them on the floor into piles organized by color.

Re: Does wood make a difference?

I urge you not to take this decision too lightly...

My Strat (Fabled 1994 MIM made of original 1954 prototype parts sent to the Mexico factory and built with the oversight of Leo's great grand nieces' 2nd husband, loaded with pickups that were wound on the same day that Joe Bonamassa bought his first 59 LP) was awesome. The treble was bell like, the mids were haunting, the bass was woody, and the poly finish glowed under the fluorescent lights of my basement. One day I foolishly set my guitar on a *gasp* aluminum Musicians Gear stand and it's never been the same. All the mojo is gone and it sounds like any other plank of wood with nickel wires on it. The fact that I stopped practicing certainly has noting to do with it I'm convinced, so make sure to only set your guitar on real deal, old growth rainforest woods that were harvested by child labor, lest you are saddled with my fate too!

Re: Does wood make a difference?

I like mahogany stands, I figure that it'll bleed out some of the mahogany-ness into the guitar for the tone I prefer

Re: Does wood make a difference?

It is well known the A4 magnet gauss is drawn into and thereby diminished by the porosity of Mahogany. Stands made by it or any related species are inherently tone suckers. My suggestion for sustain, attack, and stability is Walnut for the body cradle and Ebony for the upright and neck cradle to shore up the highs and maintain the snap of a 3-pickup guitar. All connections shall be made with 10-24 Silver Buttonhead Torx Thru-Bolts to ensure extended frequency range, complex harmonic content, and amazing dynamic response.

Re: Does wood make a difference?

Well played Chris. Just more proof some people never read the posts they just regurgitate the same drivel we have been reading for years.

I read the OP, then had to reread it, very well played sir. Was also struck by the responses that apparently did not past the first sentence of the OP.

Re: Does wood make a difference?

Personally I quit reading a couple in when the OP got goofy (always do), but certainly "got" that it was an attempt at humor.
I chose to answer based on the thread title since there's no doubt that someone just beginning guitar will click-on wanting to actually know if wood makes a difference.

I'd rather post the "same old drivel" about something that really is meaningful than jump on the goofy-pile with another not-so-funny wisecrack post.
Wisecracks are awesome but I like them much more when they're spontaneous and not so organized. lol

Re: Does wood make a difference?

The title is misleading.

Anyways, I found the perfect guitar stand, but not sure what kind of wood it's made of (please, feel free to make clever but tasteful pun remarks)

Re: Does wood make a difference?

One of my favorite things to do is get wood.

I use to get wood every night as a teenager, I didn't get home till 8 or so because of sports. By then, we burnt up the entire days supply and I had to chop some more if I wanted any heat the next morning.

Re: Does wood make a difference?

This thread reminds me: I need a new strap. Which strap material would be the 'best' and make the most difference?

You know no one can answer that without knowing what kind of music you play. In any case, 70% of your tone comes from the strap to strap button joint. That, and it's silly to think you can pursue a certain tone based on the inherent properties of strap material when some of the raw materials are harvested from the top of the plants in drought prone regions while raw materials for another strap from the same manufacturer using the supposed "same" raw materials may have been sourced from a flood prone region. And what about the unpredictable effects from swamp tides?

What are you ... like 14?
