Just got off the phone with the amp guy, he said the blowing of fuses might be the transformer grounding. I also found a wire that came off and can't figure out where it goes (even got the wiring diagram), So yeah, It's going to the shop on Sunday.

Scary thing is, the dude has actually been working on amps for decades... I just think he's been buzzed a few more times than he really needed to be... in every sense of the word.

Sure that will drop the gain in the amp but it wont suddenly make an SLX a clean amp. The voicing just isnt there its thin and lacks richness its just not whats its designed for. I tried the same thing in mine and found it even ruined the disortion tones. I was hoping it would tighten the amp up and make it not so loose which it didnt do it. The SLX can be a funny beast.

dont swap any tubes in your slx to lower its gain. All that will do is neuter the thing. Theres no point trying to fit a square peg in a round hole.The slx was built to be a screaming hi gain all tube hair metal machine. Let it do what it does best. Let it rip as its designed to do and enjoy it for what it is. That said...get it worked on, get fresh tubes and a bias done while its in the shop.

Use the SL-X for distortion and the Vyper for cleans...

There are not many amps with as much gain/saturation as the SL-X.


P.S. you are using a fishingtrawler to catch 1 fish a day.

filter caps. dont touch the contacts since they can retain voltage and zap you good

I say this with all the love in my heart when I say this....but this whole thread is just ate up with dumbass.

I mean it happens to the best of us, nothing to be ashamed of, but the OP needs to put the back of the head cab back on and walk away slowly.

That's distortion. It doesn't have to be heavy or crunchy to be distorted. Just the ever-so-slight distortion on the clean tones is where the magic lies. I've never found a transistor-based amp that does that convincingly. My experience with solid-state and modelers is relatively limited, but it still doesn't pique my interest.

But seriously, there's squeaky shiny clean, like the solid state Roland StereoChorus or "Enter Sandman";, and then there's clear and clean, like The Beatles, Stones, The Cure, REM, etc. etc. where the tubes add an indetectable smidge of .4% harmonic distortion- kinda like the difference between tape/records vs. Cd/ mp3. It doesn't sound "distorted" to your ear, but it feels like holy water in your gut. Most popular music with "clean" channel elec gtr is recorded on tube amps (like Fender, Vox, Ampeg) because the ever-so-slight mush of the tubes imparts a dreamy, optimum listenability because one's brain is seduced into constructing a perception of a magical incomplete tone, instead of tuning out certain harsh, repititious frequencies which causes a certain fatigue that makes the mind lose interest.

In other words, compare a tube distortion on 11 to a regular distortion pedal or Vypyr saturation on 11. Or compare your Vypyr clean to tube clean. If one makes you feel like " okay, enough, i puttin the gtr down now" & the other makes you feel like "dang, i could play this all night", then the difference in love-of-guitar isn't so subtle.
