Downtune a 24.75” axe

Welp my 12-60 set sounded muddy, was cumbersome to play, and the biggest two strings sat on top of the nut instead of in the slot. Worked okay for simple noodling but I’m setting this axe up for precision metal so it’s not going to work out. I could get down to drop B with good tension, but at what cost?!!! :) Drop B and drop C just sound so dreary compared to drop C#, somehow.

not bad for a $6 experiment. 11-52s seem to be more my speed right now for downtuning and precision playing. That set went back on last night and then I effortlessly recorded some more killer riffage! Will pop over to Tios and Clips to share.

Is true. That extra 3/4" on the Fender scale makes low B and C come alive. I like tighter/thicker wound strings than you I guess, I use a 52 for my low E in standard. 70 for good tension for a B string is playable but a bit much.

Weird for me playing in drop tunings again, it feels a little confining after being in standard only for the past few years. I think I like all 4ths the best these days.

I like all fifths myself. CGDA was a really trippy tuning to play around with when I was learning tenor guitar, very open sound after playing standard guitar tuning for so long.

Yeah the rule of thumb is one string gauge per whole step tuning change, or one half string gauge per half step tuning change to get about the same tension.

One of my friends played around with New Standard tuning a little bit. I never tried it. Seems like all fifths could be a lot of fun, thinking through scales and breaking old habits. All fourths just feels really natural for me.
