Drum Software Suggestions

Hi all, I will be getting my firepod with cubase le this week and need some advice on what drum software to get. I know nothing about this topic...but I know this forum is never lacking in knowledge or opinions...thank you any help/suggestions are really appreciated.

hmm not knowing a damm thing bout recording hardware or software...the firepod comes with cubase le which is a steinberg product and the groove agent appears to be made by steinberg...does this in any way mean that the groove agent 2 integrates better with the cubase? dumb question I know but I had to ask...If not any reason this wild drum kit from hell would be the software drum of choice...apart from the obviously cool name...?

Them having the same manufacturer won't make them integrate better or run more smoothly.

Put it this way... Listen to the new Meshuggah album, Catch 33, and then tell me that DFHS doesn't sound amazing.

My question has been this: can DFH do stuff other than metal. I love Meshuggah and all, but that's not at all the sound I'm shooting for.

it can do rock to jazz, and anything in between.

Yeah, that's just one example. It has specific sets for everything from deathmetal to ****tail music.

There is always the option of grid-ing out drum tracks. Its more tedious than using a drum program but you don't have to buy anything all you need are some drum samples. Also you don't really have the luxury of velocity controls and drum bleed that some programs do. Just a thought.

To properly grid them out, you still need a prgram like battery to trigger the samples .


I grid mine out in Nuendo, and use Battery2 to trigger samples.

I'm not talking about midi stuff...I'm talking about taking the actual audio sample and griding it out in the edit window. No triggers needed. Its just like playing back any audio file. Snare hit every quarter note???? copy and past your audio sample to every quarter note in grid mode.

Not really, though it does take some practice. Once you grid out a good length section all you do is copy and paste all tracks. Its really just the intial griding that takes time. Alot of times guys will grid a scratch drum beat just to play to initially when writing songs or messing around.

Groove Agent will do many styles, and being a VST instrument, integrates fine with Cubase..or SOnar, or anything that uses VSTi's. Plus it grooves like a real drummer. Honestly, check it out.

Whats Battery 2? + whats the point of it?

Battery2 just takes a midi signal from a program (it's run as a VST), and uses those midi commands to trigger drum samples.

Basically, I program out where I want the hits, and Battery triggers them.

If I remember doesn't groove agent automatically play a beat for you, meaning you don't program anything? Don't you just choose the kit and the tempo and style you want so to speak?

it has some programming options, but yeah, it is pretty much set and forget.
