Dual Rectifier For Me?

I'm curious if the dual rectifier would be a good amp for me. I want three channels and the versatility looks very nice. I like the solo feature, master volume, 6L6 or EL34 options, rectifier choice, built in variac, etc...

How well could this amp hit classic rock sounds, more specically Pearl Jam and the grunge scene. So basically good cleans and classic distortion.

I know you are going to tell me to try before I buy, but I'm interested in your opinions.
 
My friend has a dual recto, and doesn't care for the cleans so much; but as far as the dirty sounds, it's hard to beat. I think he wants to sell it, so let me know.
 
IMO: the rectifier sounds very modern and is on the darker side. Though it has good Highs. With lower gain setting i find him a bit to bass heavy. i would call it boomy. Maybe you can simply tweak this.

Never heard them make a good classic rock tone. Maybe it can do.
But it's good for Punk, Hardcore, (New) Metal.
 
I don't really know if it can nail classic rock but from what i've read, with el34s on the first dirty mode AND the right guitar (ie strat with singles), you m ight be able to handle Hendrix, Clapton Zep etc. Good Luck! Peace.

Right now I have a marshall tsl122 and its not really doing it for me so I know i could sell it and be able to buy one of these things. I really want three channels tho.

Any other thoughts?
 
Actually .. if you switch from the modern to the classic mode .. back off the gain a skoash.. and spend a little time dailing in the EQ [as a little does alot] . these rec's get great classic rock tones.

They do alot more than just metal .. so dont let the diamond plate fool ya.

I do , however, stand firmly in the older 2 channels corner as they sound better to me.

If you are looking for a sound from a certain era .. in might be wise to look into what amps made the sounds that tickle your fancy .. you'd loose the 3 channels but nail the tone you're seeking .. and maybe a solid dist. pedal (or a nice pre like a v-twin) could give ya the extra gain you'd get from the 3rd channel.

Theres your problem... IMO the TSL is one of the worst marshalls, its very lifeless and has no fullness about it.IMO.. Get a DSL , they nail the classic tone right on and have footswitchable 2 channels, its a comprimise for a 3 channel but definetly worth..i nearly made the mistake in buying a tsl and im so glad i got the DSL.....
 
If your looking for classic rock, i would suggest a marshall. you could dial in a nice classic rock type tone, and put a pedal in front to push the gain up their for a good lead tone. The marshall 2205\2210 are channel switching as well but not everybody is fond of them. Just trying to open up the fields for ya. You mentioned the tsl, i feel the older marshalls IE jcm 800\pleix's have a different voice than the dsl or tsl so i wouldn't rule out a marshall based on just the tsl.good luck.

I play alot of pearljam and similar things as well as some heavy stuff, and I have the Marshall DSL and it does it all really well.
Mike McCready uses a plexi with a ibanez tubescreamer for his dirty sounds, so the DSL is a pretty good choice since you can get all the gain you want from it and still get the older marshall sound. The ultra gain channel lead 2 sounds a little bit like a mesa too. I suggest the 50 watt head. And its a heck of alot cheaper than any Mesa. And this is coming from someone who loves mesas too.
 
How are the DSL's clean? I know mccready and gossard right now use trentino amps, but for a long time their clean came from fender's.

One of the reasons i thought a mesa might do it for me because I know they are 6L6 capable.

How about a used reissue plexi with a tube screamer?

I do want to be able to do the occcasional metal thing like alice in chains.
 
I highly reccomend the DSL. It does pearl jam really well and to answer your question about the cleans, they are very decent.
 
I have a two channel, series II, Single Rectifier and I love it. It does do the metal thing really well, but it will do everything else too. The clean channel is actually the most surprising thing on this amp, it's actually clean. This amp can do anything from crystal clear clean to Disturbed Metal and everything inbetween, but it takes a lot switch throwing and knob twisting to get it right and in my case I can only have two options (in your case it would be three options) ready at one time plus the boost for soloing. I highly recommend this amp. Beyond a Rec I have two suggestions for you to try. The Mesa Mark IV, it is a little confusing to use, but in my opinion it's the most versatile Mesa. The other amp that I hear a lot about, but haven't ever owned one is the Bogner Ecstasy. I have played one, but not enough to render a judgement on its versatility, but I know guys that play these things say they do everything extremely well. At that price I would hope they do, but if money isn't a concern, check one out.
 
The Plexi + tubescreamer will be great for pearljam, hendrix, zeppelin, things of that sort, but you wont be able to do the occasinoal metal thing, as you could with a DSL. The DSL covers all the bases, it has pretty darn good cleans, and several different kinds of great marshall tone with any kind of gain.
 
I really appreciate all the posts, how much would dsl50 run new and used? And How much could I ask for a tsl122 in good condition. Few scuffs in the tolex but nothing that stands out, have to look for it, and I also put casters on it.
 
Also with a dsl50, i always want to have my clean channel accessible, any way I can get around having only a clean and lead channel?
 
Even tho you only have a clean and lead channel you will find is is quiet versitile, i had an agurment with myself between a tsl 60 and dsl 5o , tsl because of its 3 channels but dsls tone snd sound quality more than made up for the tsl's lack of.,,,DSLs arent that expensiveproboly near enough the price of a tsl..the dsl 100 is only fractionally dearer than the DSl 50 but in the end i choose the 50 cos who needs 100watts of power?

dsl 50 are like $1050, i think dsl 100 are only like $100 more, and, a 50 watt marshall is quieter than a 50 watt mesa, so, just keep that in mind, even though a 50 watt marshall is still loud
