Dumb question... measuring neck dimensions

To measure neck dimensions can I literally use a digital caliper at the nut to measure width, then measure depth just in front of the nut and 12 feet with the strings removed? Like I said, dumb question, I want to quantify my current guitars' neck sizes to know exactly what to order for a replacement neck.

I have a cheapie profile "gauge" (plastic one) that I tried to use to compare neck shapes, but it didn't really work so well. Is there a better method? (Again, just trying to determine how my guitars compare to listed specs for builders and parts suppliers)

Thanks!

Yep, that's what I've got. I think I was doing it wrong, measuring at the nut gives a dimension including the start of the headstock flare on a Fender. I measured first and 12 fret and came up with numbers that seem much more accurate.

As a side note, its interesting that these are my favorite three necks:

Black Strat
0.830 - 0.890
1.667 nut
Fret 0.1095 x 0.045

Sunburst Strat
0.835 - 0.913
1.7005
Fret 0.094 x 0.058

Blue Strat
0.833 - 0.893
1.6855 nut
Fret 0.1035 x 0.051

I like the frets on the sunburst one the best. Pretty similar feeling at the nut for all three.
