Duncan Antiquites - which guitar?

I have a Les Paul with Pearly Gates that I just love. I have another with Seth Lovers that I also love the sound of. I have a 1983 Ibanez AS-80, (ES-335 style with maple body and neck with rosewood board). The pickups in that are Super 58 Alnico III.

I picked up an Epiphone ES-335 Dot Deluxe Flametop from my friend. Here is the deal. I am considering some Antiquities, but go back and fourth if I want those in exchange for the Seth Lovers and put the Seth's in the Epi.

What pickups would be best for the ES-335 Dot, (Seth's or Antiquities) or other. I am not sold on the idea of the Antiquites, but dying to try some. Are they best in a Les Paul or ES-335 style. Are Seth's better in Les Paul or ES-335?

Re: Duncan Antiquites - which guitar?

A lot of people around here really love Seth's in ES-335 style guitars and I guess I can't blame them. IMO the Seth's are good in either guitar but if I really had to choose I would put them in the 335 and put the Antiquities in the LP. Just my opinion though.

Re: Duncan Antiquites - which guitar?

Either set would sound fine in a 335 style guitar. I have to agree, though that the Seths would be my choice. I have Ants in a Les Paul and they are perfect for that guitar.

I've got 5 sets of Seth's in several models of guitars (LP, 335, & PRS Santana); love them. I have a pair of Ant's that currently aren't in a guitar. Their aged A2's have very rounded high-ends in warm guitars, too warm for me. A few other members have commented on the same thing. To me, Ant's are best in brighter guitars, like Strats. Personal preference, you may like their sound in an LP.

I could very easily just get another set of Seth's, but thought it would be a good time to try some antiquites. Leaning toward the suggestion of Seth's in the ES-335 and the Antiquities in the LP. Keep em coming!

Re: Duncan Antiquites - which guitar?

I have used lots of humbuckers, Seth's, '59, PGates, AIIPro, Custom, Custom 5, Custom Custom, 57 Classics, Burstbuckers, etc. My favorites are PGates and Seth's. I don't know much about the WLH, so it could be a consideration. I gravitate to A2 magnets, so will have to spend some time checking these out.

I have had some fun with an AIIPro neck with an UOA5 mag in the neck and a Custom in the bridge with A8. It has been a good combo, but I have an overwhelming desire to go back to A2 style. Will check out the WLH. BTW - I love Gov't Mule, Allman Brothers, Skynyrd, Stones, ZZTop, AC/DC, Aerosmith Black Crows, Blackberry Smoke and all the classic rock you can name. Our band plays some Reggae but mostly Classic Rock style. The heaviest we get is Black Keys, AC/DC maybe Rage against the Machine.

WLH's have some of that warm/full A2 vibe; certainly don't sound like a typical A5 PU (like the Jazz or '59). Great for the music you're playing. Worth checking out.

Re: Duncan Antiquites - which guitar?

I am going with Antiquites in my LP and Seth's in the ES-335. I want to get the Antiquites either in a guitar or out of my system, so it is time to try them.

I have to say the WLH have me very interested. I found another thread where blueman335 and Aceman and LtKojak (who loves ya baby) talk about magnet swaps on '59 and the WLH. I am going with the Antiquites, but if I get another guitar or another wild hair, I am going to try WLH.

Re: Duncan Antiquites - which guitar?

antiquitys have one of my favorite winds for humbuckers. every time i think, oh the neck is too dark or the bridge is too bright i see a video and the guitar sounds great so i dont mess with em. a friend of mine has a '57 ri and it is one of the best sounding les pauls ive ever heard. maybe you like them stock, maybe you do a mag swap to get what you want, but they are great pups

Re: Duncan Antiquites - which guitar?

I have 2 sets of Ants and i love them. But none of the pups has the original magnet...because i think they have a great wind, only the mags lack. Both necks are A4, one bridge is RCUO A5 and the other has an A8. The A3/A2 and the full charged A2/A2 sets weren't shabby either.

Re: Duncan Antiquites - which guitar?

I hope not to have to change magnets, as I hate taking off covers. It is easy when you can't make a bad decision. I am anxious to do all my pickup swaps and hear these Seths in the ES335 and the Antiquites in my LP. Thanks for all the guidance!

Re: Duncan Antiquites - which guitar?

I would rather have the Seths i the 335 and the ants in the LP than the other way 'round.

There is little difference in character, but the Ants have a big more sparkle and a much bigger difference between neck and bridge.

Re: Duncan Antiquites - which guitar?

My Ant's are pretty warm with the aged A2's. Not a lot of sparkle in them. My Seth's are more open and livelier.

Re: Duncan Antiquites - which guitar?

Yesterday I had a chance to remove the Seth Lovers from my les paul and put them into my ES335. I got the whole harness installed and no sound...not a crackle or anything. I knew it must have been the output Jack, so I thought I broke the connection. It spun and some of the ground wire was touching part of the positive terminal, In between the non conductive "sandwich" on the jack. Pulled out everything and found the error. Touched up the connection and put it all back in. Everything is working, but it was super late when I finished, so I couldn't play it through my amp to really hear it. Kids basketball this AM and now Super Bowl Party. Not sure when I can play this...maybe Monday after work...
