Duncan Custom SH-5 Special Van halen pickup

Re: Duncan Custom SH-5 Special Van halen pickup

Seriously......give the EVH tone hunting a rest for a little while. You might as well start chasing rainbows for the pot of gold at the end

Re: Duncan Custom SH-5 Special Van halen pickup

It was seymour's version of what Eddie would like in a pickup because Ed did use mighty mite distortion pickup also dimarzio super distortion pickups,it makes alot of sents. The pickup was never released, but from seymour's describtion of the duncan custom sh-5 would make sents to Eds van halen 1 sound,if you understand what I mean.

Until I hea these words from seymour's mouth, Im callin BS on this one

Re: Duncan Custom SH-5 Special Van halen pickup

There isn't one, everything that Ed Hunter and pitbull (or nitro, whatever you want to call him) are saying is just speculation, or guessing, as most sane folks like to call it. Basically Ed Hunter likes the VHI tone he gets from the Custom, so he has convinced himself that Seymour designed it for EVH, even though there is absolutely no evidence (besides their guesses) to support this idea. It took Frank Falbo himself telling them that the CC and the EVH Frankie pup weren't the same for them to finally admit they didn't know what the hell they were talking about, but they just won't let the SH-5 thing go...

Therein lies the rub. It's an EPIC GUITAR SOUND that spawned a generation. Nobody denies the awesomeness of the first Van Halen record, but there's a certain point where you have to just enjoy the history and move on. I mean, some Civil War re-enactors get a little too into it.. ya know?

Re: Duncan Custom SH-5 Special Van halen pickup

Let me explain it again for some, there is a thread that Devastone started which was "What year did the Custom come out "some need to read that thread and then come back to this one, beginning to end. There is no talk about a specific ad that seymour put out about a "special van halen pickup"it was about what year seymour came out with duncan custom, Seymour did advertise in guitar player magazine in 1979 about his line if pickups,Ohhhhh, then I started this thread about the custom COULD have been the special van halen pickup,Ohhhhh. As for elliot easton,he uses duncan jb's has been for a longtime,Ohhhh.

Please....let me die now before the zombie apocalypse....
actually a zombie apocalypse would be a hell of a lot more fun than another EVH 1 pickup thread.
Bring on the zombies!

Re: Duncan Custom SH-5 Special Van halen pickup

Oh this thread is Epic...

yep SH5= definitive early EVH tone for sure :bigthumb:

I heard that he used a lipsticktube pickup retrofitted to a '58 Tele through a 61 Brown Deluxe. Hence coining of the term "brown sound".

I think the "special" VH pickup was the custom shop '78

Sure he could have... but thats all you have is "could" Everything else is pure speculation. You have no proof that the elliot easton story isnt true. Theres no proof that the release dates are nothing more than coincidental.

The bottom line is you have no direct proof that the SH-5 is what Ed used. Sorry but the proof isnt just there. Now you've made up your mind that your right. Great! now go play your SH-5 and be happy but you arent going to convince people without proof. At this point its beating a very very very dead horse.

Re: Duncan Custom SH-5 Special Van halen pickup

Edgecrusher, you need to open your mind if you can,Ed wasnt honest when it came down to his equipment you cant be that naieve.(could-proof)is there any soild proof of any of Eds equipment.

Re: Duncan Custom SH-5 Special Van halen pickup

On this forum it's EVH everyone wants to sound like and worships.
On MLP its Slash.

Id rather try and sound like myself.

Re: Duncan Custom SH-5 Special Van halen pickup

^ right?

who cares what some meth-head happened to have in the guitar that he happened to be playing when he just so happened to be recording an album that everybody for the next 11 years or so tried to copy?

that happened a long time ago and music has come a long way since then.

Eh? Thats my point there isnt any solid proof of what his equipment was. Naive is trying to think that you can convince anyone without proof. Telling people fairytales wont do it either.

I've read where you get your ideas from and they arent based on any evidence beyond what you want to hear and a bunch of well maybes and could haves. Just cause something might be possible doesnt make it true. Just cause you think its that way doesnt make it true.

Actually not so much. If you pay attention there are only a couple that come in here and chump their nuts around like chimpanzees in a poo fight over the whole EVH 1 thing.

Whats funny is the tone chasers havent figured out without Eds hands they will only sound like themselves. But I guess they see that as being a negative instead of a positive.

The thing that blows my mind is how hard they try to convince themselves that they've got it figured out.

Re: Duncan Custom SH-5 Special Van halen pickup

1. On Youtube there are 20 people at least that get that sound in .with all different kinds equipment..why do people not think it is unattainable.....any difference could made up in studio reverb, flange, mic placement.

That sound is all over the internet..?????
