Duncan JB i love it but i hate it

Hi!
I have fender strat with JB. One day I love this sound, but another day I hate this sound.
Does anyone have the same?

Re: Duncan JB i love it but i hate it

I don't really like it, but I don't think I am the target audience for it. Most people have pretty passionate opinions about it.

Re: Duncan JB i love it but i hate it

It just always wants to solo. I don't like the way it cleans up or does rhythm playing, but plenty of people make it work. Really if all I did was distorted shreddy leads it would be my only pickup.

(Except I think pinch harmonics jump off it so strong they're almost like a regular fretted note.)

Re: Duncan JB i love it but i hate it

The JB is my favorite. The only thing I don't like about it is chords can get congested.

Re: Duncan JB i love it but i hate it

I keep wanting to try a JB with ceramic spacers added to it. I think that this may help tighten it up more for chords.

When I was B-tuned Metal Guy, the legendary TB-4 JBJ was my favorite pickup. It doesn't appeal to me much now.

There are two types of players:

People who play in a situation in which they need to cut through, this group is mostly lead guys.

People that don't need to cut through, mostly rythmn and headroom players.

The first group I find most often loves JBs, the second group I find hates them.

Re: Duncan JB i love it but i hate it

I had one in a Strat, sounded excellent in a mix, not so much on it's own, thin, hard to dial out high end. Got some good early VH tones out of it, in a mix. I still have it, waiting for something else to put it in.

Re: Duncan JB i love it but i hate it

Seems to me like they were intended to cut through the mud when distorting a tube amp, which they do quite well. Clean they're awful IMO.

Re: Duncan JB i love it but i hate it

I always play clean and really like it for that actually. Thing is I have an A4 in it with A2 spacers so I get it to sound full for my blues playing. I like its high output, can get it to sound PAFish, or can get it to sound teleish or stratish.

Pretty much nails it for me.
When I'm doing mostly fill stuff in a multi instrument setting and need to cut through LOVE them when i'm the only guitarist in a 3 s piece not so much so---.

I like the TB-4 in my G&L ASAT Deluxe. That guitar has 250k pots, and a coil split. Works pretty well for this old, classic rock and blues guy.

JB in a strat as well.

It's there as a tentative winner over some others. Most of the time it does what I want, but some days all I can hear is 'JB' if you know what I mean.

Re: Duncan JB i love it but i hate it

I recently picked up a Dave Mustaine Thrash Factor pickup which is based on Dave's unique JB pickup that has a tighter feel and more bottom end. I have it installed in my PRS S2 Standard 24 Satin and it really shines at both lead playing and rhythm playing compared to a JB I used to use.

Ok, every time I see you mention this mod... Well, my pants get pretty tight. So since my name is Clint, I Was hoping that common thread between us may inspire you to give me detailed instructions on how to get the materials for this mod!

Re: Duncan JB i love it but i hate it

Cool fellow Clint. It's the best mod ever, I love it. The A4 sweetens it while making it more even and still precise. Adding the A2 spacers fills it out output wise so it's never brittle and also adds some bass to it without making it spongy.

Here is the link for the A2 spacers:

You can get the 2.5" x .5" x .125" smooth A4 wherever you want but here are some at AddFx:

Right on, thank you! Axerus has a ton of cool stuff! I have 3 rough alnico 4's I wonder how that would end up, you know instead of polished...
