Duncan pickup booster or Boss GE-7...which one?

Which one of these 2 pedals is a better choice to use a boost for your tone? I have not tried either, but heard good and bad about both. I currently use 2 guitars, both with a HSS setup. Anybody with experience with one or both, please give an opinion.

I havent tried the duncan pickup booster but i have a modded GE-7 from www.tone-jam.com I found the stock pedal annoying noisy and very hard to dial in frequencies. I like using it for soloing because you can change some of the frequencies to boost the mids up a tad and punch through. Ive also heard good things about the SD pickup booster to so Id try one if I were you.

The Boss is going to add EQ and a boost if needed,but it also adds alot of hiss to your signal...

The SFX-01 adds boost and has a 3 position resonance switch without the noise.I use the SFX-01 and it comes highly recommended by myself and several members on the forum..

The Boss is going to add EQ and a boost if needed,but it also adds alot of hiss to your signal...

+1 I have both and like the SD SFX-01 Pickup Booster better. The GE-7 is a good EQ/Boost pedal but as John have said, it adds a lot of noise to your signal. SFX-01 is the best $80 i've spent on a Pedal.

Not that the Boss GE-7 is a bad pedal,but I hated the hiss when plugged into an effects loop.It was even worse placed at the front of an amp..If the mods mentioned above fix that,then very cool...Maybe the GE-7 just needs metal film resistors and upgraded caps to get rid of that hiss?

SD booster over the GE7 all the way. The GE7 is a noisy tone-sink.

if you're messing with the boss GE-7, be sure to put it in the effects loop before coming to any conclusions about the pedal. mine is noisy as hell in front of the amp, even when you're only cutting frequencies. but in the effects loop, it is just as silent as any other type of pedal (this must vary from amp to amp)

with that said, it can make a wonderful boost

and that is why the people at tone-jam
made the sniper ge-7. I know alot of people that use a ge7 for solo boosting. And doesnt the pickup booster not affect the over tone of the guitar and amp and things like that it just increases the performance of the pickup? (thats what i thought anyways)

No, the GE-7 is not a bad pedal at all. It's been in my pedalboard since i first bought it in 1982 and had been my EQ pedal to this day. It's an excellent EQ pedal.
That sounds like a good idea for a new mod John :fing2:

I've found with the Boss GE7, that's it's all about where you put it. Mine did the hiss thing until I moved it to the end of the signal line, and for whatever reason, it's quiet now. EQ pedals are often overlooked in the tone quest. Adding the Boss GE7 to my
board was a big(and cheap) positive for my tone.

I used the GE-7 in the effects loop of a 5150 in the rehearsal studio and it did the job well enough, but it did add hiss when it was engaged. The sniper modded GE-7 sounds sweet

I've been using a GE-7 in front of Marshalls for lead boost for 20 years. (2203 'way back when, now a homebrew 18-Watter knockoff.) I have not noticed hiss or noise, but I generally just switch it on at the start of a solo, and right off again at the end. I like the overdrive it gives by slamming the preamp 12AX7 way more than any distortion box I've ever tried. It also allows you to re-sculpt your EQ curve in boost mode. I generally run it with the sliders in a slightly lopsided, inverted U shape, with the upper mids boosted a bit more than the lower mids, little or no boost at all at the ends.

Other satisfied GE-7 users that have not been mentioned above: David Gilmore and Steve Stevens.

honestly, I haven't tried the SD booster, but my GE-7 does the job just great for me. I have mine 2nd in line after my CS-3 and there's no noise or hiss. I like its flexiblity because it lets you boost or cut your signal while allowing you to shape it at the same time.

If you are wanting to add some EQ then go with the GE-7 but for a dry boost go with the Duncan. I love mine, it helps me get a nice overdrive sound at lower volumes, and gives me lead boosts when I've got my amp up at decent levels.

i used to have a ge7 and it was ok, but like everyone else said, it was noisy.
the duncan pup booster is primarily just a clean boost, but with the res switches you can get a fatter sound if you want. put it in front of a tube amp on the edge of break up and whe you turn it on, youll smile. it pushes the amp really nicely
