Duncan pickups with mixed magnets?

Re: Duncan pickups with mixed magnets?

I agree. I think A5 can be more shrill than ceramic in bridge position. Sometimes that's called for. My favorite magnets for bridge position right now are A4 and 8.

Re: Duncan pickups with mixed magnets?

Thats why I like the idea of A5 for the low stings and A2 for the high strings.

Re: Duncan pickups with mixed magnets?

I'm sure they would. If you want to diy you can order the spacers and have them sticking out the side with the center magnet boosted up on something which I did and it works fine. Or you can do what Gregory did and take a grinder to them so they'll fit. Either way it's not a TON of work to make your ceramic and alnico humbucker a reality.
It was an A5. I broke off a good third first before grinding. It was down and dirty, but made a marked difference. I need to buy some that were properly cast to ensure they don't lose any magnetism from excessive heat. Some half-width A8s are also on the menu.

Regarding double-thick A5s: as neck pickups, PAF Pros are killer. If they cause Pepe to run screaming, all the better.

Re: Duncan pickups with mixed magnets?

Regarding a compound magnet, my spidey sense tells me degaussing issues might be mitigated if you charge it after the sections are bonded together.

Re: Duncan pickups with mixed magnets?

No. The P-90 design is inherently flawed, so they all change tone with time. The nature of the beast. Although it'll take many years to really get noticeable, though.
You change your strings when they're dead. Why not your magnets?

...don't forget that SD has attempted to make a business out of charging a premium for pickups with dying magnets. ;)

Gregory, two things: 1st. re-read the part about magnets' tonefootprint depending on mass. Even it you cast the mags to their exact half, putting two together doesn't make it sound like one whole.

I'll give you an analogy: the sum of the vocal chord extension of two ten-year old children exceeds the one of an adult baritone . However, when the sing together, they don't sound like an adult baritone, but like two children.

2nd. PAF Pros don't use double-thick A5 mags. Never had, never will. And with over 11,000 turns of wire and a brass baseplate, I wonder what's your definition of a "killer neck p'up", as this recipe, putting into consideration their use of hi-level of carbon in their hex-headed screws, will lead to a wooly bass, scooped mids, low resonance point but a "clancky" picking sound. If you put a ceramic magnet in it, you get a fairly standard bass p'up.

Of course. And you can also buy another guitar because yours is out of tune... most pros do, isn't it?

What the heck are you talking about?

I didn't even so much as suggest that they would, but appreciate your taking the time to offer a dissertation.

You're right, though they appear to be slightly thicker than 0.125". Your opinion of what makes or doesn't make a good neck pickup means absolutely zilch to me. :D

What the heck are you talking about?
