Re: Duncan pickups with mixed magnets?
It was an A5. I broke off a good third first before grinding. It was down and dirty, but made a marked difference. I need to buy some that were properly cast to ensure they don't lose any magnetism from excessive heat. Some half-width A8s are also on the menu.
Regarding double-thick A5s: as neck pickups, PAF Pros are killer. If they cause Pepe to run screaming, all the better.
Gregory, two things: 1st. re-read the part about magnets' tonefootprint depending on mass. Even it you cast the mags to their exact half, putting two together doesn't make it sound like one whole.
I'll give you an analogy: the sum of the vocal chord extension of two ten-year old children exceeds the one of an adult baritone . However, when the sing together, they don't sound like an adult baritone, but like two children.
2nd. PAF Pros don't use double-thick A5 mags. Never had, never will. And with over 11,000 turns of wire and a brass baseplate, I wonder what's your definition of a "killer neck p'up", as this recipe, putting into consideration their use of hi-level of carbon in their hex-headed screws, will lead to a wooly bass, scooped mids, low resonance point but a "clancky" picking sound. If you put a ceramic magnet in it, you get a fairly standard bass p'up.
