Duncan pickups with mixed magnets?

I read that a certain fender pickup uses a dual magnet: A5 for the wound strings and A2 for the plain strings.
The pickup in question sounded really good when I played it! Fat on the low stings and smooth on the high strings, very balanced with a complexity to the tone that is very desirable.
Does Seymour Duncan have anything similar in their line-up?

Re: Duncan pickups with mixed magnets?

Ok so someone actually had some succes with the A5,A2 thing, good to know this :). I got plenty of magnets in a shoebox btw, ceramic and alnico altogether, I guess that's a really bad idea then? lol :D

The difference is Fender-style single coils with rod magnets vs. humbuckers with bars. I've heard this question asked before, and thus far I haven't heard of anyone pulling off the FiveTwo thing with a humbucker.

The only mixed bar magnet examples (that work) that I know of are P-90s, Phat Cats, and P-Rails all of which use a pair of conventional bar magnets next to each other rather than end to end.

Mojotone makes a humbucker with an A8 in the center flanked by ceramic spacers.

I will say that the Five Two is one of my favorite Strat pickups ever. It gets the right balance of cut and warmth.

Might sound like a silly question, but would the Custom Shop make a humbucker with an Alnico mixed with ceramic spacers?

I've always wanted to order a Custom Shop Five-Two Stag Mag, but have never gotten around to it.

I'm sure they would. If you want to diy you can order the spacers and have them sticking out the side with the center magnet boosted up on something which I did and it works fine. Or you can do what Gregory did and take a grinder to them so they'll fit. Either way it's not a TON of work to make your ceramic and alnico humbucker a reality.

Where can I buy a pair? Been wanting to try this for years.

I also think that if someone made a multimagnet humbucker that it would be best done with a construction similar to a stag mag, you can't just weld two magnets together.

That being said, I think a neat magnet combo would be A5 under E and A, UOA5 under D and G, and A2 under B and e. Or maybe replace the UOA5 with an A3, who knows?

Not under. Next to.

Right. It's no big deal. Just use a regular spacer under the center magnet to boost it, with your ceramic magnet spacers on each side and it works fine... Or grind em. Duncan is shady and they won't offer any of the stock Invader spacers that fit perfectly.

Not at all what I'm thinking. One Alnico in the center flanked by a spacer on either side. Oriented sideways if need be.

That's what the pic is. Just forget about the bottom magnet, you'd use something like plastic to boost the center magnet, and then have the ceramic spacers sticking out the side. Or you can grind the spacers to have everything fit flush.
