Duncans "answer" to the X2N

A friend of mine has been using Duncans for years and he loves them.
He recently got an X2N, which he fell in love with.
Nevertheless, he asked me to find a similar duncan pickup.

Can anyone recommend him something?

He has a Big neckthrough V
Maple core, mahog body, ebony board, double locking floyd.

Thanks for the help

Duncan doesn't offer anything that sounds like the X2N. The X2N is hotter than even the Invader and is more balanced EQ wise. Sorry but if you want X2N get X2N

Re: Duncans "answer" to the X2N

Yeah x2n is really in a class of its own. The **** thing weighs about 3lbs and you have to set it really far from the strings. But it is one of the best Dimarzios I've tried. VERY excellent lead voicing for a ceramic pickup.

Re: Duncans "answer" to the X2N

If the dude likes output, I would tell him to try a Livewires Heavy Metal. Hehehe, It would make an X2N look weak in comparison. Or, the new Alt 8 might be a good choice. Noting Duncan makes is like a X2N but, there are plenty of high output possibilities.

Re: Duncans "answer" to the X2N

PATB Distortion could satisfy his need for output while still retaining cutting attack. Plus it'll let the strings vibrate a little more.

Re: Duncans "answer" to the X2N

Actually the best thing about the X2N is not the output. It's the extremely balanced tone and clarity. I think that is a fantastic sounding pickup....I actually was hoping they'd release a version with less output!!!

Theres something to be said for loyalty to the company, but if he likes the tone then stick with it.

Re: Duncans "answer" to the X2N

There is nothing balanced sounding in the Duncan line. They're all either bass heavy, scooped mid, boosted mid, or treble heavy.

I'm not sure which size magnet they use in the X2N, but if it's an oversized one, ala the Duncan Distortion, the smaller sized magnet (like in the Custom) would give you less output. You could also add a resistor.

The X2N sounds good! I never looked any further because the specs sounded so ridiculous. I'm surprised to hear that it's actually a good pickup.
