Dunlop Jazz III pick imprssions

after using for almost 8 year Dunlop 2mm Derling pick i decided to try out Dunlop Jazz III and since i was on trial mode ordered one of each dunlop picks in
a renege of 1,5 - 2mm. with exception of Jazz III - they are 1.38 mm after couple of hours of playing trough the picks i shortlisted regular and EJ Jazz III. I was little skeptical about its small size but quickly was reassured. going down from 2 to 1.38mm is a big difference which needs readjusting way of picking but this small red pick is the cocaine to your fingers. firstly they have incredible tone. they wrap
around strings , almost finger like dynamics can be achieved. no other picks i tried before were that versatile. i had to hit strings harder in the beginning to get mass i was getting with 2mm ones but it took me only couple days to get same mass as with my previous pick and go beyond. incredible picks. i'm seriously impressed.
cleanness , acurasy and speed at least doubled up . no wonder Eric Johnson and Bonamassa can shred.
regular III , black III and EJ III have slightly different tone. to me noticable.some people say they don't hear difference but i assure you there is . and although they are all 1.38mm they feel as if they are different gauge.
to me regular shiny III has best tone. slightly sweeter and brighter then EJ one but very subtle difference. my final choice is Jazz III -EJ. it's is more versetale to me. it feels little thicker and also looks tiny bit thicker. regular three feels little too thin to my playing style. i'm heavy hitter so EJ is a winner for me. very impreseed -TONE is incredible. nearly forgot. if you play a lot and especially play 11's or heavier they wont feel same next day . i use 11's and after about 4 h. of playing they ware out . new each day -bottom line.

my verdict - give it a go -WORTH IT !!!

Re: Dunlop Jazz III pick imprssions

The problem I have with these is that they are hard and sharp. I'm always afraid to tear up the guitar.

Re: Dunlop Jazz III pick imprssions

I used to use thick picks until I discovered they were more a hinderance to me than a help. I found the jazzIII's to be too small and the XL's to be just right, but I hate the raised lettering. I've been using the planet waves black ice for awhile, but for the last few months Ive also been using the ibanez paul gilbert 1mm signature picks. They are both about the same thickness, the planet waves might be 1.14 or something like that. Only major difference is the feel. Satin for the PW and Slick for the PG's. Both are very good.

Been usin' the little reds for years. For what I do on electric, they're absolutely perfect for me. :)

Re: Dunlop Jazz III pick imprssions

Depending on how I feel about brightness I use the black tortex 1.14mm Jazz IIIs, or the EJs. They ARE cocaine for your fingers. When I try to use full size picks I'm really awkward now. lol

Re: Dunlop Jazz III pick imprssions

I used orange tortex for years and bought a ton of them so I could put about 20 in every case.. Then, I discovered jazz IIIs.. So, used the reds for last couple of years till I found the new carbon fiber ones.. Those have such a killer grip, I LOVE em!!!

Sweetwater is the only place Ive found that carries em

Re: Dunlop Jazz III pick imprssions

It all depends on what style of music you're using the pick for. I have a bunch of the Jazz IIIs (in the red, black and ultex flavors) but they lend themselves well to certain types of music. For all-around use, I find the Ultex .73 sharps work the best for me.

Re: Dunlop Jazz III pick imprssions

Ugh, I hate them, too little, don't flex enough, and they sound funky to me. If I pick light I can deal with them, but I've used 1mm Dunlop nylons ever since I started playing (max grips now). 20 years later I don't see a need to totally change my technique to use a funky pick.

Exactly why I like them :). In fact, i wouldn't mind if they were shaper :D.

I used to use red ones but have come to prefer the black ones, as they feel a bit less slippery. Curious about the EJs.

Re: Dunlop Jazz III pick imprssions

I used the red/black Jazz III's for years... but now I use the translucent yellow Ultex Jazz III's...they feel even better.

They feel less slippery than the regular ones to me. They have an almost chalky feel. That's a bad way to describe it but that's the best I can do.

I love the EJs.

My old guitar teacher calls the yellow ultex picks the "toenail" picks.

if you like regular shinny Jazz III you gonna like EJ's better. much less slippery, slightly louder , tiny less brighter and little more stiffer but so much more
flexible . its step up imo.

Re: Dunlop Jazz III pick imprssions

Jazz III also come in a full size pick. I like the 1.5 Dunlop Tortex Sharps in White.

Re: Dunlop Jazz III pick imprssions

I use the black tortex Jazz III, great pick. I'm trying to transition to a thumb pick since I do a lot of hybrid picking, but will have to really file the suckers down since I'm so used to holding these Jazz III with just a bit of pick hanging out.

Re: Dunlop Jazz III pick imprssions

Try Dunlop 208s sometime, easiest playing pick I've ever used, and I tried everything.

Been using those about 10 years and just love them, even more than the hyper expensive V picks.

208s are nice, for sure. Not as bright as the Jazz III picks, and just as articulate. The larger 207s are great on mandolin, too

The EJ Jazz III's are ever so slightly bigger, just a tad over the regular red Jazz III's. They also sound a tiny bit warmer but you will only notice this when playing clean and they grip better because of the raised lettering. Great picks, I hope Dunlop keeps these around for a long time to come.
