Dunlop Jazz III pick imprssions

Re: Dunlop Jazz III pick imprssions

I got me some Joe Bonamassa Jazz III's direct from his guitar tech when I was backstage before one of his shows. If anyones wondering, they're regular Jazz III's just says Joe Bonamassa on them, and Jim Dunlop on the other side.

I thought they are identical to EJ's . have you tried EJ's ? . are you 100% they are identical to regular Jazz III's not EJ's ?

You know, I'm starting to think that this EJ dude has put some thought into even the most esoteric things when it comes to guitar tone and that he may be on to something.

I've been using those for years. Only the H3's, the H1's have a rounded tip and play completely differently. A lot of my friends in town think I'm nuts for using such a small pick, but I wouldn't dream of using anything larger. Especially when I look at the pick some of them are using. It's about 4x bigger, and at least 2mm thick with holes in the middle, and costs $6. I can't imagine why I would want to use one of those.

Ooooh, you got gold & silver, you lucky S.O.B.!

Re: Dunlop Jazz III pick imprssions

Love me some Delrin. :D

Too slippery. I hate it for picks, but love it for skateboard slide pucks. Makes for a great tuning and decent sounding nut material too!

I like the Jazz picks, but the 3.0mm Jazz Stubby works the best for me.

I like them every now and then, the uber thick pick and the material make for a very interesting attack. It's really fast and sharp...like a fat 'click'. Specially with the full size Stubby.

Re: Dunlop Jazz III pick imprssions

i must be a freak because i like the triangle picks. even the standard picks feel too small and hard to hold on to in my hand, which is weird because i think i have pretty small hands as guitar players go, even if they're big for a girl. i use yellow tortex when i play my acoustic, green tortex for electric, and .73 ultex when i play bass.

I play the EJ Jazz III's. I have all 3. EJ, regular red ones and JB's Jazz III's. Joe's are regular red Jazz III's. Same shape, glossy finish and tone.

Re: Dunlop Jazz III pick imprssions

By the way, regular red Jazz III's and Herco Flex 50/Flex 75 use the exact same material. That's why Bonamassa's tour picks are also gold and silver ;-)

Re: Dunlop Jazz III pick imprssions

I love these regular jazz III's, but they go flying out of my hands. I tried the max grip black stiffo versions, but it didn't work. I have instead attacks my jazz III's with a knife, cutting grooves into them to create grip.

I am looking to try those carbon fibre max grips, I hear they are amazing....

Re: Dunlop Jazz III pick imprssions

I used orange tortex for years and bought a ton of them so I could put about 20 in every case.. Then, I discovered jazz IIIs.. So, used the reds for last couple of years till I found the new carbon fiber ones.. Those have such a killer grip, I LOVE em!!!

Sweetwater is the only place Ive found that carries em

Was waiting for the best Jazz III Dunlop make to be mentionned.

The maxgrip series was a revelation to me - all that stuff that Mick Thomson mentions in the development of the carbon fiber one is spot on.

I moved from the standard black jazz 3 to the carbon fiber maxgrip - oh my.
On a practical level - the pick literally sticks to your fingers- you would have to sweat an obscene amount to cause it to slide aorund.
The grip means you exert less effort holding the pick, so for fast downtuned metal a la Fear factory, despised icon, some slipknot stuff, whitechapel etc, where you're playing at over 190bpm - you don't fatigue your wrist as much.
Also - so hard wearing - they last about 3-4 longer than a nylon jazz 3 does, more than justifying the slightly raised price.

Then finally the tone - what the carbon fiber material has over the nylon used in the red and black jazz 3s is perfect for guitars tuned to C or lower - the treble detail is amazing - playing thick strings under high gain and low tunings can often accentuate how a pick makes the strings sound.
I realized that nylon's attack was too slow - swallowed up a lot more of the string's initial vibration.
Carbon fiber solved all of that - you get pure string sound - no treble loss
The attack sounds almost instant - when blasting out those dino cazares style machine gun riffs, you can hear every note without feeling like those PM'd triplets are bleeding into each other because of the slow attack that, imo. nylon, tortex, ultex and delrin all have, when compared to carbon fiber.

Carbon Fibre max grips are the bottom line for fast downtuned modern metal -end of.

Like him/slipknot or not, Mick Thomson is a tone freak and the fact that he road tested and approved these picks says a lot.

If you want to put these to the test, buy this pick alongside some tortex, ultex and nylon jazz 3s, play the same riff with the different picks and you will hear the superiority of Carbon fiber for the type of riffing i mentionned earlier.

regular Jazz III has slightly better tone to EJ. if it was size of EJ i would happily switch to using them. they feel little thiner than EJ to me as well . may be because they are notch smaller. but i'm very happy that i discovered this Jazz III !

Well the tone is subjective but the regular glossy red Jazz III's to me sound a tad brighter then the EJ's. Both are great, but I ended up liking the EJ Jazz III's better, just personal preference.

YUP! And, incidently, they are not much more expensive.. As soon as I heard they were carbon fiber, I figured they would be alot more.. nope..

true , tone is subjective. my choice is EJ . it says it all.

Re: Dunlop Jazz III pick imprssions

They're my favorite, ever since i found out EJ used them.

Why I like them:
the pointyness is perfect
the thickness and size are perfect
the roughness is perfect

I think they're good for more technical players that do any of:
alternate picking, sweeps, pick-and-fingers, hybrid picking.

The pick doesn't get "stuck" on the strings. And also, it doesn't "fling" the string, and it doesn't have any kind of sound that it adds. Some soft picks add a kind of a flinging sound. And ofcourse the speed of it due to its dimensions and pointyness is a huge benefit. There are some picks like the Jazz 3 that are either too thick, too smooth, too heavy, too rounded, or the tip just doesn't feel right. Jazz 3s are just perfect for me.

Love the Jazz IIIs!

I always keep them around...but for the past year or so, i've been playing the Red Bear LiL Jazzer Tuff Tones!

The Jazz III has been my go-to pick in recent years. I love the shape and feel. Very fast and accurate and really easy to play. I also like the stubby chode picks, such as the 3mm lexan stubby's, and the primetone's, jazztones, etc. Most picks with the Jazz III type size and shape I really love playing with, and usually the thicker the better!

I just received some Red Bear picks in the mail a few days ago. I got a regular version Lil' Jazzer, and its a great pick (Gypsy Jazz with speed bevel). Right now this is my favorite pick and probably the best I've ever tried! Although, they are expensive with a ridiculous waiting period too. I had the small pointed v-picks too, and they have a nice feel and sound, however I don't like the size/shapes quite as much as Jazz III.

Even with some of the other crazy picks I have, I can always happily return to the Jazz III. It really is the perfect shape and size.

Tim
