Dunlop Jazz III pick imprssions

Re: Dunlop Jazz III pick imprssions

Love the Jazz IIIs!

I always keep them around...but for the past year or so, i've been playing the Red Bear LiL Jazzer Tuff Tones!

Woah, that thing looks cool, I gotta try one!

Edit: nevermind, I just saw the price....

Re: Dunlop Jazz III pick imprssions

Anyone know of a Jazz 3 style pick with improved grip (I plan on buying a carbon fiber max grip to try) like having holes in them like that red bear pick, but not super expensive?

Re: Dunlop Jazz III pick imprssions

Hey, I just got on the the Kirk Hammett Jazz III's (you get it in the KH pick tin) and it's pretty cool, it has a V cut out of the back so your fingers have more grip.... plus it's bright neon green!!!

Re: Dunlop Jazz III pick imprssions

the regular Jazz III's design is great specifically for alternate picking. Not very well suited for heavy down picking, although I don't dig into my strings that hard. The EJ's on the other hand has more area and the tip is slightly more blunt so you can get a better 'smack' out of a note. I use it exclusively on my washburn idol.

For years I used the 2.0mm stubby pick, but they don't last long before they loose their edge. A few years back the guy at the local music store said "try this" and handed me a Red Jazz III, I've been using them ever since! :)

The grip on these little puppies makes it hard to drop your pick, even with sweaty fingers or dry (I'm fortunate I don't have sweaty hands/fingers!)

I love all Jazz type picks, each has their own special "flavor". 1363727229519.jpg

Re: Dunlop Jazz III pick imprssions

I went to Jazz 3 picks a couple of years ago when the Max-Grips came out and have been hooked ever since. The grip is amazing and they allow for a great amount of accuracy when playing.

The funny thing is that I'm able to play the regular J3s now too in addition to the Max-Grips, which is funny in that I always had trouble with traction with them in the past. Not only that, but I've never found a J3 I didn't like- they ALL work very well for what I'm trying to do. That is with the exception of the John Petrucci J3s- I can't STAND using those picks.

The only way Dunlop could improve on the J3s even further would be to-

- put the better-defined J3 tip on the Max-Grips, and either

- make them thicker, or
- make them out of acrylic (the material used by V-Picks).

Re: Dunlop Jazz III pick imprssions

I like the Jazz picks, but the 3.0mm Jazz Stubby works the best for me.

My favorite pick. It actually feels like you are holding a pick. And tone for days

Jazz III are way too small. But love the accuracy of them

Still Big Stubby 3mm my favorite

Re: Dunlop Jazz III pick imprssions

I use the small red stubbie 1.0 for strats and the larger red ones for a white falcon. The small red ones have a wonderful shred picking quality to them and are super expresive on strat quacking tones (position 2 and 4 on the five way pickup selector). The large reds are great as they have the same tone but have a little more flex to them. On a hollow body its cool to hold the pick more towards the rounded top and let the rest of the pick flex back and forth over the strings almost like a thin pick slapping tone and yet you can instantly firm up the larger red by pushing down on it and pick thru a scale run or arpeggio runs and with the hollow body get a wonderful picking attack tone. I have been useing these picks for years. The origanals were clear and if you drop them somtimes hard to see.

Used jazz III picks for the last three years. Really liked the XL jazz III's the best. But recently switched to Dunlop Delrin 1.50mm picks. Right now they are my favorite pick.

Re: Dunlop Jazz III pick imprssions

Love teh Reds, been using them for years.
Everything else feels "clunky" to me,but I should check into some of the newer models...

I can't even get outta the store without losing the Black ones,tho...

Re: Dunlop Jazz III pick imprssions

I've been rocking the Jazz III xl's in red for around 8 years until... I read this thread which motivated me to try something new.

I just received the Jim Dunlop, John Petrucci model Jazz pick(s) in my mail tonight and have given them a good old melting/workout.

It/they are slightly smaller in size and harder in texture. They actually glide across the strings a little better compared to the xl. I feel my sound is clearer, more articulate and my picking actually feels cleaner, clearer and more direct.

You can't go wrong with any of the Jazz's

You get mail at night? Man first the saddles now the picks you really are treating yourself.

Re: Dunlop Jazz III pick imprssions

:D well... they were in my mail box when I arrived home at night :D

Little treats are needed whilst patiently awaiting the big treat, being my bad ass custom Jem.... with 24 frets not quiet 37.

Kramersteen... You must have chop stick fingers :D

You should post a picture in your builds thread of your fingers. That would be so hilarious :D

A fret to finger comparison ha? I do a lot of chops but not so much of the stick variety.

I use the jazz stubby 3 mm picks; they're stiff, but the curve lets the string slide and the sharp tip has a distinct release.
