durable (but cheap) guitar...

ok so im goin to college next sept. (late august really), and i dont really wanna bring any of my current guitars cause i dont want any damage on em, just in case, especially my new gibson explorer once i buy it. so im lookin for a good durable guitar that i can get for around $350, im thinkin maybe a used ltd viper, or even a mexican tele (as much as it doesnt really scream metal its still just for fun). whatever i get ill probably just throw some emgs in cause i havent had any emgs yet and if i get somethin cheap i dont really have to worry a whole load about natural sound that way. so what do you guys reccomend?

RondoMusic has some great stuff, the most killer LP copies for 200, solid wood, set neck...same thing as epiphone, only it doesn't say epiphone. Better quality control too. They have LP's, King V's, Explorer's, LP DC's, SG's....the works man!

Take a guitar you're gonna get used to. Why take a total piece of crap guitar? Just don't let anyone fukk up the one you always play!! Take and play a guitar you wanna get used to. I do understand where you're coming from though. I can honestly say if I was young and going off to college...I probably wouldn't take a $1500 Les Paul with me...but then again, I know friends who have and kicked any moron's ass who touched it that didn't respect the instrument.

My suggestion would be to get a good guitar that plays and sounds well acoustically....such as a Schecter or Epiphone. I honestly wouldn't even worry about changing the pickups in it. I's personally just like to have one with me that plays well. Besides, half the time I don't play through an amp anyways....but that's just me.

I like the idea of a Mexican Tele. I have one that I got for $260 with a hotrails in the bridge already. I dont' worry about any damage to it , and it plays pretty well too. It would praobably be great for school. Look around at a couple of different axes though and find one you like for cheap. If your school daze ends up like mine you'll want a guitar that you don't have too much sentimental (or dollar) value with

What about one of the G&L Tribute range. People were talking about them recently on the board - apparently they're quite good. Decent prices on Musicians Fiend too.

i would go with a good mexi strat. they are durrable as hell, trust me from personal experience. its been dropped, thrown, dropped on the neck, and once dropped out of a 2-story building (landed on the bottom) and the worst that happed was i need a trust rod adjustment! it a sick guitar.

i'd go either the rondo route OR (and some people will laugh but i kid you not) OLP axis. ive had the axis for about 2 years now and its now my proclaimed "Basswood Tank" and for good reason. this guitar for a low as you pay for it, can take a beating. you take the money you save and put some nice duncans in there and it sounds great as well. the action is low and plays REALLY nice (compared to a lot of mexican fenders and LTD's i've played). i also modded it with a push pull tone pot for series and paralell.

rondo has great durable guitars from what i have (2500 DC) but ive only had this since december and only giged it twice, but it seems to hold up really well. once again, with the money you save, throw some nice duncans in there and your set.

oo, and when it got the big drop it chipped the paint a little and needed a new set up, but thats it.

For what its worth, we got my boy one of those $100 Squire Bullet Strats for X-mas, and it plays and sounds great. I love messing with it.

Durable + Cheap = Squier strat.

Strats are for the most part nearly indestructible, otherwise "Blackie" or "Number One" would´ve never gotten to look like she does. And that Squiers are cheap I think we can take as a given

you can get a really good guitar for $300. i've got many good guitars for $300 and under. a few.....I got my charvel strat for $300 and it has duncan JB and Jazz in it. I got a yamaha RGX820Z for $300 and it has duncan JB & 59 and also a piezo.... my fender esquire was $300 and it has a invader in it..... you can find good guitars at that price range.. you just have to look around a little

Durable? you cant go wrong with a Tele. Never broken a fender. They can take a lot of abuse and just keep comin back for more. The Mexi tele sounds like a plan to me.

If you like metal, and like the idea of a Tele.... then i'd go to Musiciansfriend.com and get one of those Esquire Custom GT's. Their going for $299 right now, and they look like the perfect guitar for hard rock. And they even have an SD Invader!

Looks like they have Am. Std. style hardware too. And with a set-neck, i don't think you can go wrong for $299! Not to mention those cool "race car" finishes with the competion stripes.
