Earl Slick's Firebird

I was visiting my daughter at college this past weekend (New Paltz, NY), and stopped in a guitar shop in town. Now, I'm not a huge fan of Firebirds, but I tried one that was hanging up and it sounded beautiful. The store owner(real nice guy) said it had belonged to Earl Slick and that Earl had changed the pups to customed designed Dimarzio's. He was asking $1500 for it (as usual, I didn;t have that kind of cash on hand), so I had to leave the guitar there. Probably could have gotten him down on the price. Played it through a nice Bogner combo. He has a ton of Naylor amps & PRS guitars too.

So, for any of you guys who are in that area of NY, and are looking for a Firebird, go check it out. The store in off of Main St., as you're leaving town. Take a left before the bridge and it's in one of those little shopping villages, in the center, next to a coffee place I think. The shopping village is right on the road. You can't miss it. (forgot the name of the store, sorry).

Hey, if you live close to there, go get and let me know what you think. It had a real nice neck on it and as I said, it sounded beautiful..& the amp wasn't even cranked up.

It's off exit 18 on the Thruway. If you're coming from the south, it's a left after you go through the toll, then straight on until you get to a large green bridge. That's where the shop is.

Cool Story Jeff. If we ever do another L.I. Jam? I'll have to get my Firebird outta exile and bring it down. It's a sweet guitar And I'd love everyone to
have a whirl with her. My cousin has it now. Reason for the exile? I got
robbed 2 years ago. Luckly they missed the Bird cuz' it was under my bed. :saeek:

That sounds fantastic. I'ld love to see it. We definitely, have to organize another jam. Maybe in a larger place (although Cchris' shop was very cool).

Scott,

I forgot to mention, that shop had quite a few nice looking Teles too. Thought of you when I saw them. All seemed ripe for painting (except for the really cool butterscotch one).

No problem. I don;t imagine we'll get anything together before the Spring. Glad you're interested. We had a nice bunch of guys here last time.

If I buy that Firebird it won't be around my neck I can guarantee that!

:laugh2: OH YEAH !! A Bird has gotta be slung low!! That's the main problem
with Firebirds is they have a balance issue. You gotta relocate the strap
button to behind the neck. But if Earl Slick owned it ? my guess is it's
been done already.:D
BTW, Anybody remember Phantom,Rocker & Slick ?? I can't remember
the name of the tune? But they got some air play in the mid 80's

Scott,

You and KMC are right. However, if you guys are like me....it gets harder to see the guitar these days if it's slung too much below the ever-expanding waistline
:laugh2:

Re: Earl Slick's Firebird

OK so I saw it, wouldn't touch it that would be too tempting. Man that shop (Black Creek Guitars in the Water Street Market)had some nice stuff! Sparkletop LP, Teles, PRS and quite a few others but Jeff you didn't mention the amps!!!!!!!!!!

Holy crap! Alessandros, Two Rock, Fuchs, Carr, Germino, Dr.Z man I got dizzy and had to leave. My wallet started throbbing and I started to sweat. What I thought was an old tweed princeton (or similar) was a Fender Blues Jr. in a relic'd tweed cab, outstanding job btw!

Must go back soon with some real money!

Also if you go to New Paltz stop in Rhino Records (yeah was started by the same guy) in the shopping center next to the middle school on 299, almost across from the McDonalds. It is a great shop for oddities and used stuff, a crazy selection and I always find something really cool when I am there plus they're dirt cheap!

Re: Earl Slick's Firebird

Scott,

Sorry about not mentioning the amps. I was so enthralled with the bird, that I forgot. Yeah. He's got great stuff there. If you have $$ with you, it could be dangerous! I'll check out that other shop in a few weeks when I go back up. A suprising find without a doubt.
