Early '80s Donnie Iris sound

Yeah, think "Ah Leah" thick and "Sweet Merrilee" cleans. What's going to get this kind of sound with a pine-bodied tele with a maple top and neck? Discuss.

Re: Early '80s Donnie Iris sound

Donnie plays a Strat in the video, but the lead guitarist plays a Les Paul. Donnie uses a fuzz pedal in the Jaggerz hit, The Rapper. He played keyboard with Wildcherry, also. He's also a recording engineer, so he can get any sound he wants.

Crafty,
Im sorry Im gonna be zero help here, especially with you sporting a tele. But Donnie Iris?? Wow, thanks for bringing him back to the front of my brain!! Awesome tunes!! Good luck with your quest!

Re: Early '80s Donnie Iris sound

Far out. I don't recall Donnie Iris ever being mentioned on this forum.

Re: Early '80s Donnie Iris sound

"Ah Leah" is a 1975 Les Paul standard played by Marty Lee Hoenes... either it's a short delay (he used an Echoplex at the time) or it's a chorus pedal like the MXR into a Marshall or Boogie amp.

Crazy awesome song BTW, one of my '80s favorites.

Re: Early '80s Donnie Iris sound

That recorded version is a Les Paul into a Marshall. Period.

Put a Tele SuperDistortion into it, and get a 50 watt Marshall head, and don't overdo the Gain, crank up the output, and send it to a 4x12.

Re: Early '80s Donnie Iris sound

You guys are awesome. I was up at 4:00 AM feeding my son and had that song stuck in my head for no particular reason. Anyway, I am looking at upgrading the pups in my home built tele. I built up the body a year ago and stuck some cheap eBay pups in it. Tragic, I know, I have a MIM strat with EMG SAs and an LP Classic with DiMarzio Air Classics. Thinking maybe a 1/4 lb set or a Hot Stack set. I want that big tele sound and solid gain through my Blackstar HT 40. Here's a pic:

That's a great looking guitar. I don't think I've ever seen a Birdseye Tele.

Thanks! I've never seen one either, that's why I made it! I wanted a Classic Vibe when they came out, had a bunch of pine laying around from an old waterbed, found the 3/8 Birdseye veneer at the local wood shop, glued it all up and finished it during the World Series last fall. Nice little guitar, but the cheap pickups are so sad. It was a budget build, but wow, after using premium pickups in my factory guitars, it's tough to listen to it.

And Donnie rocks too. '80s New England sound.

Throw a Seymour Duncan Quarter Pounder in it, rock out, and never look back!!

I agree with Aceman, it's a Les Paul into a Marshall cranked. Donnie and the Cruisers were an old school band and weren't into the 80's chorus sound. Donnie on Strat is a underrated guitarist and a great singer and arranger.

Re: Early '80s Donnie Iris sound

I mentioned the Les Paul & Marshall first... I even told you guys what year and model it was... and that there's a good chance he used an Echoplex for the short delay instead of a chorus.

You did.

And agreed - awesome tune.

Yes. Donnie Iris is a Pittsburg guy. He's done a little bit of everything from R&B to Psychedelia to Disco. He is best known for the Cruisers and their mixture of Hard Rock and Retro.
