Echoplex Settings help for Aint Talkin Bout Love

Hey guys, I've been messing with this for a weekish now and I can't figure it out.

I'm trying to play Aint Talkin Bout Love with an echoplex and get that cool slapback effect but its not working for me. I'm not sure if it's how I'm playing it and i'm just bad, or if the settings are wrong. I watched a video of Pete Thorn using it for the song and I tried to copy his exact settings but it sounds nothing like his video. It's like when I turn it on it's mushy and not defined at all. That's why I'm wondering if it's just my playing.

Below are 2 videos, The first is with the echoplex off, and the second is with it on. The third is a picture with my echoplex settings.

Any suggestions? I've tried with 2 different amps, an evh el34 and the one in the video is a rectoverb 25 on vintage settings. Like, I think it sounds ok with the echoplex off (to my 1.5year playing standard anyway), but when I turn it on it just sounds bad.

Edit - I forgot to add one thing. This is with the pedal in front of the amp, so my signal chain just goes guitar--> echoplex --> amp input. I heard that's apparently imperative to the whole effect, but tbh when I tried it in the effects loop it sounded a little better.

IMO - and I'm no mega-VH geek, the key to that is

1. Using only 1 repeat. Does Echoplex do that?
2. Right time. Maybe ~300ms or less.
3. The level is key then. Have to hear it, without overwhelming the original.

I use a digital or analog, but not an Echoplex, which I'm pretty sure was Ed's delay of choice. Nice use of Flanger on the bass notes! I have when people use Phser or for the whole thing.

Check this video out, it’s Pete Thorn talking about exactly how to set your echo for Ain’t Talking ‘bout Love

Re: Echoplex Settings help for Aint Talkin Bout Love

Yeah, I feel like the effect level is too high. It needs to be quieter than the original signal like Ace said....one repeat only.

Re: Echoplex Settings help for Aint Talkin Bout Love

I kinda thought the repeat was too ‘soft” also if that makes sense.

Last pedal I did that tune with was a garage tone delay. Worked great.

Ah ok, yeah so you can push down the volume button (which i had done for the video) which makes it darker, so i'll try again with that off.

Thanks for all the advice guys,

I gotta be honest the saddest thing is that I spent so much time fiddling with my amp and pedals and like, i still can't get it right and I plugged into bias fx2 and loaded a preset for that song specifically and its like oh yeah there's the tone ezpz. But it makes me mad, i want to get it right on the actual amp lol.

Re: Echoplex Settings help for Aint Talkin Bout Love

This is the trap of going down the tone hole.

There are a hundred ways to get a tone. But once you fixate on "I need an Echoplex" or whatever, you are doomed.

About 320-330ms and 1 repeat. Getting the level set takes using your ear as it will be different in setup to setup and room to room. Play with it until it feels good to you and rock on.
