ed roman guitars?

Re: ed roman guitars?

The guy passed away.

The way I understand it he made some very nice guitars, had problems scaling the business and then reacted to people who got problematic items by evading responsibility to the point of fraud.

Re: ed roman guitars?

I would buy da ed hamer virtuoso copy if i had the money.

His work in this video is incredible :18:

I know these aren't the customs but, I bought a Baker B1 Bushwacker used. It's a nice guitar. He charges like $1350 for one though. The Michael Kelly Patriot Premium that I bought for $500 less than he charges is every bit the guitar the Baker is. I gave them to my boys for thier birthday.

Re: ed roman guitars?

Ed had some skilled folks working for him but they screwed up quite a few custom orders because Ed wasn't in the habit of writing things down. Another side effect was "sticker shock" when it came time to take delivery.

For the amount Roman's guitars cost, there are better options with the baggage of the Ed Roman brand.

Re: ed roman guitars?

doesn't really matter
I am more then willing to pay shipping for a good guitar

I guess it depends on your budget and type of guitar you want? I bet the ed roman stuff would be pretty damn awesome despite what people complain about. Its normally nothing to do with the guitars themselves! Most complaints i have read is about them doing fake copies or ed being a major dick head.

Re: ed roman guitars?

They might not do neck through? but imo you can't really beat a custom made wayne charvel guitar. The prices are awesome considering.

Re: ed roman guitars?

I don't know who's running his business these days since his death, so I'd avoid it.

Back in the day he basically subcontracted, or had working for him, the same extremely talented luthiers that big companies would subcontract their celebrity endorser guitars to.

These days there's no real face to the company, who knows if those luthiers are still involved- they seem to be surviving off pre existing buisness

This. Are you looking for
  • Something pointy (seems to be Roman's specialty)
  • Strat or Tele style
  • Quirky

Frankly, I get a vibe here that you have money burning a hole in your pocket and not so much of an idea of what you want in a bespoke guitar. Entering the process without a solid vision is probably the biggest mistake people make when getting a custom guitar made.

Think about all the little things about your current guitar(s) that are less than satisfying. Maybe things like
  • Neck carve
  • Control positions
  • Fret size
  • Pickup position

It's your money but IMO if you don't have a clear list of goals for a custom build, you're more likely to end up with a bragging piece than a lifetime keeper. Doesn't matter if you're talking about Roman, PRS or Warmoth. Sometimes, those kinds of things end up being less than the sum of their parts.

Don't ask me how I know that. :banghead:

Re: ed roman guitars?

I went into his shop in Vegas several times. His guitars were pretty darned good, but he was overpriced. And he's dead now anyhow. Who knows who is running the joint now. I'd forget it and find another guitar builder - one who is alive, for instance.

Re: ed roman guitars?

I do remember hearing horror stories of how he was an *******. But the dude is dead now so it doesn't really matter anymore.
