Eddie Van Halen

Re: Eddie Van Halen

I'd honestly say something over-wound and Alnico II. Pearly Gates and Custom Custom are ones I would consider.

Re: Eddie Van Halen

Any PAF variant- '59, Custom, Custom Custom, Blues Trembucker, Dimarzio Tone Zone.

Most people would say the besides the '78, it's the Custom Custom

Re: Eddie Van Halen

Depends on the era. Anything pre-1991, Custom Custom, Pearly Gates, 59 Model. 1991 and onward, DiMarzio Air Zone or Tone Zone, Air Norton in the neck. You'll also need to adjust your amp...... pre-1991 = Marshall, 1991 and onward = Soldano SLO, 5150, 5150 II, 5150 III, although he did record with the old Marshall again in 1994 but didn't tour with it.

Re: Eddie Van Halen

The 78' is the most accurate for the Strat sounds. I have one in a maple neck ash body
Strat and it nails VH1 & 2. MXR 6 band in front of your marshall with Greenbacks are also
part of that sound.

Re: Eddie Van Halen

Its not too well known, but Eddie Van Halen VH-1 was actually recorded in a Nuclear reactor, and pure plutonium was hardwired into his pickups , and the wood he used on his guitar was actually fossilized Wolly Mammoth bone. The guitar was too heavey to hold, so its was hoisted onot an engine jack while ediie played it. This is just one of the many facts
youll have to consider as you wade through the myriad of dessiminated information about it.

Re: Eddie Van Halen

WOW! I also always thought plutonium was part of the equation! Lol

Re: Eddie Van Halen

The one thing that I've heard about the PAF that Eddie had in that original Frankenstrat was that it was a little under the weather, and not putting out the normal charge for a PAF, but closer perhaps to a P-90. In any case, I would think a '59 might be a good choice.

Re: Eddie Van Halen

I kinda dont also get it. Its like putting a V8 in a Volkswagen. Just grab a Duncan '78 and get a ash Start with a Brass or Callaham trem and not even a Maple neck anymore, as its now come to light the VH-1 recordings were like;y as not done with a Rosewood neck. Then get a Marshall and a good plexi style overdrive, like the Carl Martin for instance, and for practicalities sake you should be able to emulate ( and I hate that word cause the digital people have ruined it) the sound.
Van Halen moved beyond the VH-1 sound, even though we still define the ultimate Van Halen sound( and I hesitate to call it pure "tone")in terms of Vh-1. Thats not surprising. On VH-1 EDiie Van Halen was useing vintage gear with production pickups instead of the jury rigged crap he used later on.

Re: Eddie Van Halen

LMAO, I was just going to post about "the EVH sound"...

Just compare:

VH '82 - http://nl.youtube.com/watch?v=LDDKzbwBaSE&feature=related

VH '07 - http://nl.youtube.com/watch?v=X1AOuiI7I24&feature=related

82, to me, sounds way more open, more twangy - like Clapton strat tone on steroids? :cool2: The '07 clip has way more pre-amp gain and that open wah sound to it, more than just higher output pickups involved? I did have a 78 for a while and was amazed at whatever amp or setting I played thru it sure had a VH vibe going - so maybe that is the way to go, the 78 or a Pearly then just throw a boost of some sort in front of an NMV Marshall? I sure like the old sound a LOT better than the "modern sound" :28:

This clip shows what I miss from the old days - Eddie and Alex would just up and jam out in the middle of the song - righteous! http://nl.youtube.com/watch?v=C19gisGTmG0&feature=related

Sorry, got on a real Eddie tangent today - LOL!

Re: Eddie Van Halen

Custom Custom - but as has been said many times before: Amp, then attitude, then the rest...Pup won't help much if you don't have the first two.

and I'm not gonna make much about the "tone" on cell phone recordings...

Re: Eddie Van Halen

The closest production pup to the '78 sound is the Pearly Gates. The PG isn't as squishy in the lows and low mids but it has similar bite and twang to the '78.

Re: Eddie Van Halen

I've said it before, and I'll probably say it again: The best EVH tone I've ever heard came from a Kramer with a JB in it, through a Crate solid state amplifier. You don't need 10000 of equipment to get that sound, and no particular pickup for sure.
