I've said it before, and I'll probably say it again: The best EVH tone I've ever heard came from a Kramer with a JB in it, through a Crate solid state amplifier. You don't need 10000 of equipment to get that sound, and no particular pickup for sure.

+1 there is not one 100% way of getting the brown tone. and rock n roll tone is not hard to get either. set the EQ how you like it and crack the volume up to ten and tear it off

Thats right Christopher. And as Serion stated, it can be pulled off with a Kramer/JB. I've done it.
