EDS-1275 pickup choices

Prayin' to Cheeses
Hey everyone,

So (as you can see from my avatar photo) I have an EDS-1275. It's the Epiphone model, not the true Gibson but it's actually a pretty good player. A while back I "upgraded" the pickups in the 6 string course, putting a Gibson 490R/498T set in. Although it was an improvement over the stock Epiphone pickups in there, they still don't really sound right. Neck pickup is boomy, everything seems muddy and compressed and it's quite a bit louder/higher output than the 12 string side (which still has the stock Epi pickups in it, and actually I kind of like the way those sound on the 12 string). I lowered the pickups some which helped a little but it's still kind of bleh.

I know that the 490/498 pair is used in the current EDS-1275 model and in a lot of SGs, but I'm just not a big fan of them. So I am looking for something else. I had heard that the older doublenecks had T-tops in them but I'm not sure what the SD equivalent of T-tops might be like.

This guitar feeds back some already, so I need potted.
I like tighter lows, strong mids and clearer highs with a little sizzle but not too much, more bite than sizzle if that makes sense.
Output wise I am thinking the "slightly hotter PAF" zone is what I need.

I recently put a WLH set in a 335 I have, and really like them but I am not sure whether those would be a good fit for this type of guitar. Doublenecks are HEAVY, they weigh about 12 lbs. I am guessing it's mahogany based on the online specs, if that makes a difference. The original pickups in it were something they call "Alnico Classics" (uncovered) and I'm not sure what the equivalent of those are. I just know I didn't like them on the 6 string part.

Sorry for the novel. Any advice/comments always appreciated.

Re: EDS-1275 pickup choices

I really like the 6 string stock pickups in mine. I have an epi 1275 with set neck. One of the older ones.

The 12 string pickups however are very cloudy and muffled. I have a set of dimarzio 36th anniversaries kicking around. I'm gonna put those in on my next string change. I'm not recommending them yet but they have to be better than stock. The neck pickup on the 12 string side even has stripped pole pieces. I went to adjust them and they sunk right in. That makes for awkward string balance.

Re: EDS-1275 pickup choices

if it was me id put a jazz in the neck and pearly gates in the bridge. clear clean neck and paf with a little bite in the bridge

Re: EDS-1275 pickup choices

I also have an older one...18th one off the line in mint condition. 1st thing I did was remove all the pickups as they were horrible. I put a 490/498 in the 6 side and swapped the magnets. Its not my 1st choice of pupsbut I had them from a 91 LP. On the 12 side I used Tim Shaw pups from a 87 LP. Incredible pups. I find keeping the volume on 6-7 on the neck or both pups keeps the 12 string nice and clean and chimey. I would recomment 36 anniv set for the 6 side if on a budget.

Re: EDS-1275 pickup choices

I tried WLH in mine, and although they didn't ultimately stay in, they were pretty nice. They're particularly nice if you like the additional overtones from the claw stop bar being further back on that particular model. I wish I'd moved mine whilst I still had them, but they were moved on in favour of my usual Slash set.

Re: EDS-1275 pickup choices

I like the idea of WLH set in the 6 string, and a Jazz set in the 12 string. Although if I owned one, the first song I'd play is 'Meeting of the Spirits' by the Mahavishnu Orchestra.
