I've been keeping this from you guys for a while, but I've been working my ass off lately to get the cash for this axe and finally it's all coming together, and I'M STOKED! Pics will be up as soon as it arrives. It's coming in Metallic Black, but I plan on doing some custom paint job. Anyone got any idea where? Thinking straight to Dan Lawrence, but that would be pricey. Anywhere that's of good quality and a little less dinero would be great.

Very cool! But a JB in alder with a maple top AND an ebony board? I hate to say that you'll probably find it overly bright. Killer axe nonetheless, you'll enjoy it!

BTW, if it's metallic black with a maple top...is the top a black dye? or what?

1. The Maple is only a drop top, not thick enough to notably affect tone.
2. Neck thru axes can usually use extra brightness

I have a Bengal Sl-2 and it is VERY BRIGHT. Itried every Dunan in it I could Afford :laugh2: I had a Jazz and a 59 in the neck, a JB, Screamin demon, Custom ,Custom Custom in the bridge and they were all too bright or just didn't sound right, for my taste.


I ended up with an Air Norton in the neck, and a t first I went with a tone zone in the Bridge. That sounded great at bedroom levelsBUT when I got into a band and a live situation, it dind't cut through at all.

So I went to a super distoriion and that was really good, but I just had a BIT too many highs for what I was doing so now I have a Breed in it and that is great.

Id say if you are doing Metal try a SD ,and if you play stuff like Fuel and Creed and that sort of new stuff try a Breed .

I hope I don't get banned for this or flammedin any way, but DImarzio has a better return policy that SD does. It is longer ( 30 ) days and they have alwways had me a new one within a weeek and a half. Both times I used SD return policy, it was close to 4 week and I'm not exagerating.

Yep, the maple top's only on transparent colors.

The SL1 is working great for me, and is currently my "Number One."

I was having a tough time for the longest time finding the bridge tone I wanted, but then I updated the chip on my Line6, and raised the action a tad, and got some good tone advice from some of the forumites here. Now, I'm very happy with the rockin' tones with the stock JB. But, it even sounded good with a Custom and a Distortion, which I might try again sometime in the future since the amp is working better.

It is the best playing axe I have for sure. Also, the fit and finish were superior to my Les Paul, which cost more. My finish is red ghost flames, and when I got it, the finish was truly flawless and was smooth as the proverbial baby's rear (a few dings here and there now, tho), and it plays like greased lightning. The Floyd works great, and the action is so good that the Floyd is even a little recessed in its pocket. It is far superior as an instrument than I am as a player, so I see it as a lifetime purchase. I really don't consider it just a one-trick pony, either. My guitar teacher even commented on the warm neck tone.

If I had it to do over again, though, I would've gone for the hum hum like you're getting. The single coil Classic Stacks really don't seem to fit the whole shred machine setup, and don't seem to match up with with the JB under high gain, but that's my opinion. They do clean up real well, however, and sound warm with combining the neck and middle pup. I'm putting in a Hot Rails neck one of these days to get more of a Murray-esque neck tone.

However, I had a dream the other night where I stood in for Glenn Tipton (wierd dream, huh). Anyway, I was playing a black Randy Rhodes (sp?) Dinky. I woke up I'm jonesin' for another Jackson, which would make three and probably a divorce.

Seattle might be doable one of these days.

Very cool! The Hot-Rails in the neck absolutely DOES IT for the SL1 IMO. I wasn't too flattered by the Classic Stacks either, or at least like you said, for the whole shred machine setup and not matching with the JB under high gain. Exactly the same. Playing an SL3 though, stock with a pair of Hot-Rails was like something spawn from hell meant for heaven.
