Elmwood Modena M60 vs. Bogner XTC Classic...

I have in my possession a mint Elmwood Modena M60. It belongs to a friend of a friend and the friend and I will likely acquire it and then resell it eventually. But it's been fun to play with for a while and compare it to my Bogner Ecstasy Classic.

First-off, the Elmwood is a 60 watt 2XEL34 amp. It's got two channels, with the ability to kick-in an adjustable gain for each channel. So it's really more of a 4-channel amp. There are two master volumes that can be switched back and forth while on each channel. This gives you basically an adjustable volume boost for leads on each channel. There are also global "edge" (presence) and "fat" (resonance) controls on the back next to the loop. A VERY versatile little head.

When I first plugged-into it, I immediately found a crunchy, hairy tone on the clean channel with the boost engaged. The tone I was getting was very reminiscent of the blue channel on my XTC. BUT... it wasn't quite as complex or "girthy". Even though I run my XTC at half-power, I chalk that up to the fact that the XTC is still a 4-EL34 amp and just has much more grunt and headroom to it. Still... I was pretty impressed with the Elmwood (considering the low price I may end-up paying for it). The cleans aren't quite as complex and snappy as that on my XTC. And they don't have near the headroom as it does. But they are still very nice.

The gainier second channel has a very nice, organic growl to it, with or without the boost engaged. There is plenty of gain on-tap there for most modern rock. Though I scooped it out and dimed it to see how close we could come to Ubershall or Triple Rec territory, it's not quite to that level for metal. Which suits me fine, because I'll never understand why someone buys a $3K handmade amp and then scoops it out and makes it fizzy so all picking dynamics and complexity of tone are lost.

All-in-all I was impressed at how close to my XTC the M60 sounded. The biggest concerns are the headroom (when compared to the XTC), and the slightly-more complex overtones of the XTC.

Would I grab the Elmwood and ditch my Bogner? No. The Bogner's got some things (intangible and tangible) that the Elmwood doesn't. But it's a pretty subtle difference. For my tastes, the Elmwood gets me to 90% of the Bogner. If I didn't have the XTC and landed-on the M60, I think that I could be very happy and content with it for good. Highly recommended if you stumble on one for a great price and are looking for a great-sounding, great-looking amp that you don't find very many of out there.

Cool review! Ive always read great things about them and all the vids and clips sound very impressive. Plus, a big draw for me is the fact that the high school I went to was Elmwood.. haha maybe that should be a turn off.

man, that rig looks WIKKED with those two heads.. :friday:

Dude, you stocking up for the apocolypse or something? That's some shelf of canned food you got there.

LOL... yup. Thats only a small part of the stash. I've got a wife and kids to feed while fending-off the zombies. ;)

Spent some more quality time with the M60 into the Ubercab tonight. WOW... have found some sweet spots. VERY impressed. SO impressed that I'm putting it at more like 95+% of the XTC in terms of overall awesomeness. The XTC still wins for headroom, slightly more versatility, and girth. But that M60 seriously gives it a run for the money! I messed with the global Fat and Edge controls and was able to dial-in some "metalic" tones for sure. Much more metal than my XTC. So in that way, the Elmwood might be more versatile. Both amps are awesome and RULE.

Dang... wish I could afford to keep her and the XTC.

I was diggin' it even more tonight. A very versatile, great-sounding amp. Has a very wicked growl when it gets warmed-up. Almost had me thinking about selling the XTC and keeping the M60 for a short while, but then I came to my senses. Still... that's a helluva temptation there. I want to keep it and use the Elmwood as my band practice amp. Thinking about taking it to practice tomorrow night and seeing how it goes. Should sound great into the V30-loaded Bogner OS2X12 I have at rehearsal space.

That's a cool pic of all of them!

As for EL-34 channel switchers......once you have an XTC, you know you're at the end of the road. All others are fun, but it's like having a Bugatti Veyron, then driving other cars.

Of course, we all love amps of all types, and that's what makes it all fun.

Yeah, no question about it Joe. I was pretty high on the Elmwood last night, but I'm sure that once I plug back into the XTC tonight I'll remember why it has been my dream amp for a dozen years or so. The M60 definitely does higher-gain stuff better than the XTC. But for complex, organic, brown tones, it's hard to beat the Bog.

My buddy (the "friend" in this story) has an Uberschall Twin Jet that he's running alongside his XTC 101B. I was over there the other day playing it. WOW! The two amps compliment each other VERY well. Where one is a little weak, the other is strong and vice versa. I could definitely see myself with a TJ as well someday to go with the Classic.

BTW... the Ubercab just keeps getting better. It's just so big, huge, chunky, deep, fat, etc. If I could only have one cab it would be the Uber.

Cool review. I have have been curious about the Elmwood, nice to have a first hand account in comparison to something I know.

Yeah, I almost bought an M90 (KT88s) instead of my XTC Classic. It was a few weeks before I stumbled on the XTC and I had been impressed with the Modena clips I'd heard in years past. But I held-out for my dream amp and am not disappointed that I did. However... I am very impressed with the Elmwood and NO doubt that had I ended-up with one before the Bogner, I would have declared the Modena my be-all, end-all amp.

Stocking up for it with the food, CREATING it with that wall of sound!!

Re: Elmwood Modena M60 vs. Bogner XTC Classic...

Took the M60 to band practice last night. We do a bunch of originals, and some covers -- from Foo Fighters to Weezer to Saving Benjamin, etc. So I needed an amp that would lay down some more modern rock tones than I've needed in past bands (classic rock, metal, and country).

The M60 performed admirably. So crunchy, chewy, and present in the mix. Very organic. Didn't have the headroom of my XTC, but definitely had the vibe. In fact, I started calling it the "Bogner Junior" yesterday.

Turns-out the freind who secured it for me to play with is going to buy it from his friend. So at least it'll be staying "in the circle" so-to-speak. Which is cool because I dig it and it's a fairly unique amp for these parts.

I think that I'll be taking a VHT Pitbull UL to my next practice. The guy selling the Elmwood has the VHT as well that he wants to sell. Ultimately, I'll be selling the VHT for him on ebay because I've got a good ebay rating and I'm buying a tobaccoburst Peavey HP Special from him for cheap -- so I'm returning the favor. The guy is a bigger gear slut than me -- he's bought and sold more gear than a music store. I bought my TC G-System and ESP Eclipse II from him for good prices in January.
