81 = Buzzsaw, cut through the mix agressively but sacrifice some warmth-like tone.
85 = Fuller, more natural sound with less ear fatigue.
The 81 is probably the pickup that gives actives the reputation of being "cold, steril, icepick, etc". The 85 is more natural and thick sounding. However it got deemed the 85 was a neck pickup and the 81 is bridge I have no idea. Honestly, if I were to label the two I would say its the other way around but regardless they are just pickups.
