Emg 85 vs. 89

Hey guys- I'm back. My registration got killed in one of the crashes about a year ago and I never bothered to sign up again.

So here's the question for you that have tried both. How does the humbucker part of the 89 differ from the 85? Is it deeper, deader, brighter, etc...

oh, P.S. -- if you hate EMG's, feel free to move right along, nothing to see here... :naughty:

I haven't experienced either, but I think you'll find the general consensus to be that they sound identical. The 89 in humbucking mode is essentially an 85; same pickup, and the single coil mode is like an SA.

+1
both modes sound as they should (85/SA) but most of the times the 89 is more practical than the 85 because of it greater versaitillity and not so much higher price(about 10-15 €)

ok, cool. I just always read the description by EMG that said "forming a humbucker similar to the 85" and wondered how similar it was.

My potential plan is to use a stacked blend pot to morph from the SA to 85, picking up that level difference in the process. The ultimate SPC control!
