would this be a good investment... to slap some 81 (Bridge) and 60 Emg (Neck) humbucking pickups in my charvel?? considering the fact the the LW heavy metals are a little bit too fuzzy for my likeing, there put out sum great distortion sumtimes hehe but the cleans and unknown cause i cant get cleans on this.. would this be a good idea?

Re: EMG Charvel :P

With an SS Setup, I wouldn't recommend EMG's. They sounded a bit sterile to me, expecially on cleans. Throw in a Duncan set, with a 59 in the neck if you want great cleans.

Re: EMG Charvel :P

What amp are you running? this is what a friend said concerning EMGs and digital/solid state. Also, you may want to use the 85 in the bridge.

"The hefty signal and fuller frequency responce of the active EMG's are a big plus when used with digital modeling amps and to some extent solid state. Many digital amps work best with a clean fat signal like the one the EMG's deliver."

Re: EMG Charvel :P

I've got a pair of EMG 89's in one of my Charvels. They are basically the 85 and SA combined. That way you can split the pickup for a true single coil sound. The cleans are actually really good and clear. The 89 has a fuller sound than the 81 with a little more lower midrange. A lot of people seem to like those over the 81s. I've got no experience with the 60s, though. Sorry.

Re: EMG Charvel :P

dude, i am very serious with sending you my JB '59n humbuckers for your live wires

allthough then i'd need to invest in a better amp...

Re: EMG Charvel :P

lol davey i thought you were kidding... but yah im running it on a G-20 Gibson amp with a V-amp attached :P its not a great set up but its good for at home

Re: EMG Charvel :P

well.. there might be your problem..
if you get a big amp you got more headroom and if it's something like the 5150 you need to push it a tad more than those measly home use amps and the cleans will be a bit better.. plus you'll have a distortion with which you can demolish buildings

Re: EMG Charvel :P

How the livewires so fuzzy? And do they also have clarity under huge amounts of gaiin or do they just sound like mud?

Re: EMG Charvel :P

i believe they DO have plenty of clarity when playing under high gain.. i'd assume they're very compressed .. but it's their output. it's so high that it can distort even a clean amp

Re: EMG Charvel :P

i doubt it would be that usefull ... it doesnt help me when i turn down the volume on my JB .. not even my '59n .. the damn amp just doesnt clean up

you'd need quite an amp to get it to clean up properly. they ARE duncans highes output buckers for christs sake.. i doubt they were ment to be played clean

Re: EMG Charvel :P

because i like to use alot of gain and i drop tune to like A so my tone can get muddy sumtimes. I am using a JB but there could be more clarity so i was lookin at the livewires or EMGs as a replacement and i would want the one with the more clarity and power, not just noisy noise.

I donno.

I can get the lead channel on my Rectifier to clean up with my JB turned down to about 1 or 2.

If you turn those Live Wires down enough the amp will eventually clean up. If you're having a problem with overdriving your preamp from too hot a pickup, then I doubt that replacing a hot set of active pickups with another hot set of active pickups will solve your problem.

Re: EMG Charvel :P

well.. i dont have em.. my amp doesnt have much heardroom anyway. i drive it as hard as possible anyway.. if i want cleans i just switch channels, or if i play on the clean one just tirn off the effect pedal..
but i'd damn like to hear em on an ENGL or a 5150 ...
