Re: EMG GD20 Pickups
Re: EMG GD20 Pickups
The pickups are just SAs combined with EMG's active mid-boost and scoop circuits.
The SA is my favorite EMG. Well-balanced, with a steely yet dark overtone that makes distortion grind nicely. Not too good for light grindy overdrive, but clean and saturated crunch are great.
SPC boosts(to my ear) around 300hz and really does make them sound remarkably like an 85 when cranked up. Makes a great lead-fattener.
EXP scoops around 1khz, gets that hollow yet sparkly clean metal/90s country tone.
Both cranked up sounds huge, like a humbucker with a metallica scoop. Not sure it's hugely useful to have that EQ
in front of the distortion.
It comes in a really, really nice pickguard... probably the only pearl guard I've ever really liked.
Would be perfect for a gigging guitar, especially in a covers bar band - they're quiet, controllable and the onboard controls are useful enough to make the setup really versatile.
I'd have to say I find the SPC more useful than the EXP - I don't think a mid-scoop in front of distortion is pleasant. It does work well for clean sounds pushing a compressor though - the scoop really makes the compression pump in a striking way.
Listen to Pulse... DG-20 is all over it. He cranks up both controls for the
ending solo of Comfortably Numb.
