I guess the EMG bashing days are not over. Who cares how the pickup looks on the inside (a place that was never intended to be seen)? It's intended to sound good, not look good, so who cares?

Has the pickup broken as a result of it's construction? No! Therefore, this is not a build quality issue (why am I the first to realize this?!) This is merely an aesthetic issue. Any design professional (regardless of what they design) will tell you that if you can't see it, it will not be detailed to be pretty. It's detailed for functionality. Therefore, you have no right to make assumptions towards the build quality of this pickup simply because you find it aesthetically unpleasing.

That's my rant. I'm tired of the EMG (and other brand bashing) that's been going on around here the last many weeks. These companies are still in business today because they are obviously doing something right. All of your gripes are subjective in nature, and while your opinions are permitted, I do not believe that it's right to come here and openly bash another company solely on your subjective opinions. Grow up.
Yeah, they're in business because they offer a product people want.
Doesn't mean it;s a good product.
Gibson doesn't make consistant or reliable products anymore and they price them like they're made of pure gold.
They live off of marketing and name recognition.

+1, Germans would say "Meine Rede" ;)

Just because you can't hear it doesn't mean it's not happening.

You may be correct, but why does that matter at all then? This is music, not math, and while there is a mathematical explanation to sound, point is, if you can't hear it, why should it matter. Explain that away, and you may be proclaimed a genious. Until then, you are doing nothing more than the internet equivilent of blowing hot air.

You say that they are living off name recognition and marketing... show me a successful company that doesn't rely in part of either their name or marketing. They have made a name for themselves, and they didn't make that name by producing an inferior product. Furthermore, you have absolutly no evidence to show that their product has declined in quality. You've spouted off before about how EMG uses old technology, never does anything new, blah, blah, blah. You evidently are also not familiar with the concept of "if it's not broke, don't fix it."

And Zerb, my German is a bit rusty (more like it's completely rusted through, tires are rotted, and it's sitting on blocks in the front yard). You're going to have to tell me what "Rede" is.

Go back and read, that's not what he said at all......

How is that relevant?

You're questioning our knowledge without any knowledge ot the contrary.

I have PROOF to the contrary. That pickup works completely as designed. There are NO dropouts on the outer strings....I've played them before. Does it sound great?? No....but it's a budget pickup compared to their regular line and I can think of many pickups costing more that don't sound that great either.

You have no knowledge of what R&D was done you've never seen the developers notes..etc...you have no idea what goes on inside the factory....stop pretending like you do.

With a statement like:

"I tooke the cover off my EMG H4- which is a passive pickup they make and it sounds like sh1t just like the rest of their pickups."

It's pretty easy to see Wixom's agenda....and with a statement like:

What a ****ing joke.
One more reason i hate this company.

it's pretty easy to see your agenda.

NEITHER of you have any idea what you are talking about...plain and simple. Just BS assumptions to bash a company that neither of you like.

You're not very good at logic are you??

You made claims(stated facts) that the pickup is of crappy quality without any knowledge of what goes into designing and building them other than taking one apart.

If you're going to represent such statements as facts then that's not really an opinion now is it?

The burden of proof is on YOUR end and I do not need to know anything to call you on BS statements that I KNOW you know nothing about since you didn't design them nor have any hand in building an active pickup EVER.

your so mad and its so funny. LOL

Re: EMG without Cover -- Pics!

I've got the HZs in a Jackson.

My 2 cents. Clarity is great, bends are no issue.. it's very "high-fi" but sterile. Kinda like a Roland JC or the active EMGs. Yeah that looks like @$$ under the cover, but then again, they work and if someone is happy with the tone, of them..thats all that counts.

For single notes/leads, the HZ screams and cuts though very well. Very nice pup for leads.

For chord work under gain it has a *really* raspy top end kinda like horrid SS distortion. No matter what amp I play though it does this. YUK.

Better than Duncan Designeds?...tough call...def not as muddy as the DD's, but the DD's are much warmer sounding (not that the DD's are that incredible...just speaking relative to the HZs). But the HZ's are def better than most stock lower priced guitar pups on the market I've experienced. I may not like the rasp, but the clarity is there. Most lower priced pups are muddy.

I'm not mad at all...it's just funny too see kids on the internet try to be know-it-alls about stuff they have no idea about.

Okay so what active pickups have you built??

Do you have notes where you consulted the actual developers of EMG products on this "issue"?

Re: EMG without Cover -- Pics!

I think the only EMG set up i would entertain is the David Gilmour setup......

WhoFan

Re: EMG without Cover -- Pics!

i love EMGS, the principle behind them, the low microphony, and the tone can be just the right thing for you. if there was no such thing as a pickup that you didnt like, they'd all sound the same.

and ranalli, calm the hell down. nobody likes a flame war. if someone's annoying you, try the little 'x' in the top right.

Re: EMG without Cover -- Pics!

OK guys... take a breath.... all o'yas...

There....

Feel better?

Listen, I'm sorry I didn't post sooner on this. Remember the "no bashing the competition" caveat? Well, that also extends to "no bashing each other."

EMG makes fine products. And the guys that own and run that company are friends of mine. But.... they're not here to defend their products and explain why they look the way they do without a cover. It's fine to post about it and state your opinions -- on either side of the question -- but please do so with respect for EMG and for each other.

That's for sure :) I totally ripped into those pickups when I "removed the covers." When I got done with the new gold covers, they worked like a charm and still sounded GREAT!

Re: EMG without Cover -- Pics!

I'm not worked up about this at all nor am I annoyed in the least.

However, it's silly to have people come on here and make false claims/slander about a company and product that they know nothing about. I come here to seek real information and opinions...but when people start representing their opinion as fact that is where the usefulness of this forum breaks down not just for myself...but for everyone. This is a quality forum and I'd rather not see it diluted with false claims and slander for ANY company unless you can back it up.

I'm a huge fan of both SD and EMG not to mention other companies as
well....so I have no stake in seeing one get bashed/bettered over the other.

Just something to think about.
