Eminence Speakers

I'm looking at getting an Avatar G212H Custom and I need some help with speaker selection.

For the last, oh, I dunno, 10-15 years, I've been using my Music Man 4x12 which has 30-35 watt Alnico's in it. They are the original speakers. Clean as can be and can handle anything I throw at it.

Needless to say, I'm not sure what to get. The pair needs to be able to handle the amp (100 watt Marshall head), and be clean. I like my amp to do the work, minimal to no speaker breakup. I don't like the V30's.

The speakers I'm interested in are the Eminence Texas Heats and Governors. Two of either one or one of each. Does anyone have experience with or familiar with these speakers? The Tonker and Wizard are other considerations. Possibly a pair of the same speaker or one of one and one of another.

Already got an email in to Avatar asking the same stuff but wanted to get some opinions from here too.

I still say go for a pair of the Eminence "modified" GB 50watters :bigok:

My three favorites would be the Governor, Wizard and Texas Heat.

Personally, I'd go with two of the Governors and two of the Wizards.

They're "clones" of the G12H30 and Vintage 30 and those two sound awesome in a mix.

So would the Governor and Wizard I'd think.

As you know I have a Texas Heat in my 2x12. It's not really broken in yet, But if you want? I'll make you some clips (Close mic'ed) Clean, dirty or what ever.:fing2:

Jeff: Too bad those aren't offered in the list for the 212 Custom. I'll ask Dave how much extra they'd cost. The clip from the Eminence site sounds nice. I love Greenbacks too but my gripe is the power handling of them. Can't use two alone with my amp but those Legends I could.

Lew: Since I'm getting them for a 2x12, then that would be one Governor and one Wizard. Didn't know they were "clones" of the Celestions. I'm assuming the Governor is voiced after the G12H30 and the Wizard after the Vintage 30?

kmcguitars: yes, PLEASE!! I would love to hear some clips, clean and dirty, and rolled back volume of a dirty tone clean...LOL. If that made any sense.

the governor is a V30 clone the wizard a g12h30 clone and the manOwar a g12t75 clone.

my splawn 4x12 has 2 governors and 2 manOwars and it sounds great. i was having a bit of a problem with some edgyness when i first got my dual recto but that was due to the speakers being in an X pattern with a manOwar on top. after moving the 2 manOwars to the bottom and the governors up top it sounds killer, the manOwars add a nice amount of chunk but need to be on bottom in my case since they do have a bit of top end edge to them.

anyway, if i were you i'd go with the governor/wizard setup i think for a 2x12 since there would be no way to stick the manOwar below the governor unless you run the 2x12 vertical. plus the added warmth/bottom of the wizard would help a 2x12 sound bigger.

i think i may load my marshall 4x12 with 4 governors since i really like them...or i'll try the 2 wizards 2 governors setup since all i hear are great reviews of that (or the celestion version of it).

Well, my concern now is if I don't like V30's, how am I going to like the Governor? Looks like that one is about to get knocked from the list. I like what I hear from the Wizard on the Eminence site.

ummm because i said so??? LOL

pairing it with another speaker makes the cab sound very different from a cab with all governors/v30s. my splawn sounds very different than all the mesa and marshall cabs i have used in the studio (with my heads) that are all V30 loaded. the manOwars add a nice amount of bottom to it, but again, need to be on the bottom of the cab since they do (with a recto at least) add a bit of edge to the top end. i never realized that edge with my ultra plus or powerball tough, only when i got the dual recto...odd. that's why i think if you go the governor/wizard route it should ballance real well and for sure sound different that 2 governors or v30s would.

but if you're dead set against the governor/v30 i have no idea what to tell you LOL. i don't want to throw anything out there i haven't heard or tired. granted i've only played a g12h30 on it's own but that was good enough to give me a rough idea of what it will do with a governor or v30. plus there have been loads of good reviews of the v30/g12 speaker combo working well together....heck, even Lew likes it and he seems to know good tone!! or at least he pretends to well hahaha just kiddin' Lew


i wish there was a 30 day return policy on speakers like pickups LOL.

Thanks again, Mike. I wish there was a place where I could just walk in and play a cab with any one of them. Unfortunately that's not so.

Tell me this, how "clean" is the Governor and Wizard? That is very important to me. Not rulling either one out but the Governor is on the chopping block if it's anything like the V30 with that high mid grainy spike. I just read in another thread that someone said the Governor doesn't have that spike and is more crunchy. That's promising.

Once I hear clips of the Texas Heats, I know for sure which way I want to go.

I probably shouldn't have used the word clone because that implies that the Governor sound sjust like a V30. It doesn't.

It has a stronger low end, smoother high end and slightly fuller tone than a Vintage 30, IMO.

Very similar...but not a clone.

Hey, bring a Governor and Wizard to the Dallas Guitar Show next month. Maybe a Texas Heat. Put them in your brother's amps.

Interesting.... Sounds like a big improvement since those are about all the things I hate about V30s.

I'm assuming it doesn't have quite as much of that high-mid spike?

That's the way it seemed when I played them at NAMM.

I like the stock V30 tone...bright and lively and nice transparent midrange that still sings with the classic Celestion tonality and "chonk".

But I do like the G12H30 better: thicker mids, more bass, smoother highs.

I know alot of people do, Lew. I actually like them too..through an amp that's not marshall voiced...like a MESA. In a closed back cab with a marshall I just don't like them...I prefer the GB/BB type sound.. although they don't handle gain as well, they stay warmer/more woody and not so nasally with the amount of gain I use (which by todays standards is probably "medium" gain). But thats just me :dunno:

This might be very interesting paired with a GB/BB/G12H type speaker Erik!!

Yeah, you're right, Jeff. The Governor is sounding better by the post now...LOL. That with the Wizard would be a great combo. Hmmmm. Definitely an option.

Now, just gotta hear what those Texas Heats sound like.

To me the Texas Heat sounded alot like the Governor or Wizard, but without so much of that chunky honky Celestion midrange...more of an American tonality to the mids.

I like the sound of that. I wish I could play through a cab with each one first. Looks like it might be "flip a coin" time when I'm ready to order...LOL.
