Epi Lucille pickups

Re: Epi Lucille pickups

Ok finally got to try the 57 neck and 490t. While this a lot closer to what I am looking for still not quite there. I found the 57 in the neck to be ok. There was a definite lack of pick attack and has a kind of boxy low end so not great but livable. The 490t was actually pretty sweet. Had plenty of power and bite but not harsh and had a nice thick tone. These pups did not work well for me in The middle position. Too much low end, not enough pick attack, and lacking any resemblance to that classic mid position sound.
So out come the gibs and in goes the Slash set. I didn't get to really give them a good going over since my lil one is asleep.

Re: Epi Lucille pickups

So, are you looking for more power as well as an EQ change?
Yes and no. I am not looking for high output pups but I do like some that are a lil overwound. I have an Epi Bonamassa Les Paul with the Burstbucker 2/3 and after adjusting them and finding the sweet spot I really like them!

The Seth's were great sounding pups but for what I am going for with this guitar they weren't (for lack of a better word) ballsy enough.

To me the 57/490t combo was a lot closer to what I want and I could have lived with the extra low end on the 57 but the mid position was completely useless for me. I spend a LOT of time in the mid position like 80% in the band I am in so this combo won't work!

I had the Slash set on hand so that's why I wanted to try them and since it wouldn't cost anything I figured why not. I had them in another epi les paul that I loved the tone but hated the neck profile. It was late last night after I installed them so I didn't get to really get to give them a good work out but from what I could tell from lower volume (2.5-3 on my Princeton) it seems like these may be what I have been after all along.

I also have decided to go down the rabbit hole and start experimenting with magnet swapping. I placed an order for an assortment with addiction fx and should be here any day!

Oh cool, yeah, live with those Slashes for a week or so before you start ripping into them...they respond well to different levels and types of gain. They do the Slash thing well, but they also do a lot of other things well, too.

I agree I have had them in that Les Paul for a while and even though I hated the neck I couldn't put it down. The tone was great and like you said they don't just do the Slash thing. They are super versatile!

I am not going to mod the Slash set but I have another project I am working on. So I think I am going to do some magnet swaps in the seths for it.

Re: Epi Lucille pickups

seths are great pups but they are very paf like which, to most peoples surprise, tend to be bright. those fat magic tones have a ton to do with the amps they were being pumped into. hell, an esquire into a 1987 and 4x12 with greenbacks sounds fat and meaty. that same guitar into a blackface princeton reverb gonna sound much thinner and wimpier. doesnt mean its bad at all, just not fat and ballsy which it sounds like is what you are going for.

Oh I know but the big clean tones I am after come from pushed blackface style amps. I get what you mean about Princetons but mine has a 12" weber that beefed it up plenty. I have a couple other amps that I play through as well but the princeton is the only one I get away with cranking in the house! LOL

Re: Epi Lucille pickups

Ok I also found that the chinese varitone must of had something wrong with it. I removed it, converted from stereo to mono and installed a handwired mono varitone switch. It has a substantial output boost! This has quickly became my favorite guitar in my collection. It has the extra slightly overwound output but not muddy at all and has great pick attack on all 3 settings. Compared to my Epi Bonamassa with BB 2+3 (which is great!) it has a little less output and quite a bit brighter tone. This thing really sings! I put several hours on her this weekend and it is just hard to put her down. I am using ab switch to go from princeton reverb to fender bassbreaker 15 with a MXR C.B.M. Overdrive. This setup covers it all. B.B., Freddy, Bonamassa, Gibbons, Clapton.

This guitar also has the most usable volume/tone controls of any other guitar I have. I tried the 50s style wiring and didnt really care for it. Maybe I just didnt spend enough time getting used to it?
SD Alnico II Pro Slash set, Modern wriring, CTS pots, Mojotone Vitamin T oil filled .022 caps, .0015orange drop/150k treble bleed. =Flippin'Awesome!

Re: Epi Lucille pickups

Putting .015uf tone caps in the "too much extra bass" p/u position can often help get rid of the bassiness. That's why so many guys go for the .022/.015uf combo for tone caps.
