Epiphone G-400 Owners:

Re: Epiphone G-400 Owners:

+1

I don't think you can go wrong at all on an Epi G400. IMO, its one of the best values out there...

As always, it is recommended that you replace the pups and electronics. Get a C5 & '59n and you are all set on that SG tone. With eyes closed no one will know its an Epi.

I wish they would use a Gibson shaped headstock on all their copies.

Re: Epiphone G-400 Owners:

I looked at both the Gibson SGs & the Epis. I preferred the Epi slim neck to the Gibson. The Epis are reasonable guitars but aren't quite a gibson. The bodies are a little thinner & a little smaller. I think they sound very similar. The Epi plays easier for me due to the thin neck.

The Epi fret inlays are plastic. The Gibson inlays are real pearl. The rosewood on the Gibson is much better. But the finish on the Epi is sealed & I think is faster. I like the frets on the Epi better. The Gibson are a little thinner, but are more "vintage" feeling.

The Epi bridge is an Epi "LockTone" TOM. It's quite nice. None of the Gibson's I looked at had the LockTone bridge. I prefer it, much less buzzing & rattling.

The G-400 is a very high value guitar. But it's no Gibson. I still prefer my Epi over the Gibson's I played. Just personal preference.

Happy Shopping.

Re: Epiphone G-400 Owners:

Id love to play one of the Epi Iommis with the thicker body!!

I had a G400 in black and really liked it. I got it to have a full set actually, V, LP, EXP. But I got it at a great price and it ended up being a Fantastic guitar. I always came up with inspired things on it. I put a C5 in it and wow, it sounded great. If it had jumbo frets, I could have really loved it.. Ill have another one day..

Re: Epiphone G-400 Owners:

I might pick one up in black then, just to add to the family. If I put a c5 in the bridge, it might be cool to have around for tracking and stuff.

Re: Epiphone G-400 Owners:

Yep, this thread is back. It seems that SG GAS is inescapable. All in all, i don't need another ****ing guitar. I don't however, have either an SG or a Les Paul. I want to at least pick up some epiphones before calling it a day.

I want the g-400 in black.

why that shows up when I google black g-400, I'll never ****ing know.

I figure that if i pick one up, (which should be like 300 dollars) and buy a custom 5, some tone pros parts, and set up the ****ing thing myself, it should slay. (just as my es-333 does, and my tele too). I found the neck pickup on one i played recently to be kind of muffled sounding. would one of those new slash humbuckers in the neck of this sound good, or too thin because its an SG?

Re: Epiphone G-400 Owners:

They're pretty good guitars, obviously you should play a few to find one of the better ones, Epi pops out plenty of dogs too. The thicker poly finish on the Epi makes it feel import-ish but drop in some good pups and get a good setup and you have a pro axe. I would make a suggestion though. Get a painted version as opposed to a stained/wood grain version. Epi uses laminates front and back to make the stained versions look better but they take away something from the sound of the guitar IMO. I had a Pelham Blue G-400 that I shouldn't have sold it was an excellent guitar but I never fully bond with the Epi necks 12th fret and up.

Go used if you can and put the money into the pups and setup.

:lmao: Yeah I mean, the pickup for the bridge will cost me like 100 bucks tops, and the tone pros bridge and tail piece is like another 100, so its what, an SG standard (kind of) for 500 dollars? :naughty:

Buy used PU's, on eBay for about half price. Hold off on a new bridge & tailpiece until you see what it sounds like (I never replace those on mine). Between the guitar (used) and good PU's (also used), you should be under $300. A used Gibson SG Std will cost far more. On a tight budget, you can get a very nice-soudning Epi SG. I've done it many times.

Hi Blueman. Do you recommend getting used PU's on Ebay? Usually I'm afraid of those, since I'm in Brazil, It would be a difficult thing to trade... But maybe it's a nice way of getting new PU's for my tele...

Absolutely. I buy almost all of my PU's used, on eBay. Just buy from reputable guys that have some experience & positive ratings. I've saved a lot of money that way.

Also, Schaller and Carvin make high quality PU's, and their HB's often sell used for $20 to $30.

The thing is that used Seymours are quite expensive (about $55, while a new one is about $72). I don't know nothing about Schaller and Carvin PU's. Do you have any suggestions? You could send me a message to avoid topic pollution, hehe.

Re: Epiphone G-400 Owners:

theres something about the way the worn one looks in photos that isnt appealing to me.

dont get me wrong, i like the colour of the guitar

is the "worn" finish similar to a faded Gibson finish?

I like that as well.

In my opinion, seymours are worth saving up for. I think in the end you would be much happier.

Re: Epiphone G-400 Owners:

I bought a white G-400 earlier this year. I compared it with the Gibsons. I preferred the neck profile of the G-400 to the Gibsons. I don't think the G-400 is on par with the overall build quality & materials of a real SG, but it's very good. I think they sound the same. For 1/3 the price of an SG I have what I think plays better & sounds the same. Great value.

I never knew the Iommi had a thicker body. I like mine. I moved the output jack to the edge, and wired the pups with a 4P3T switch to allow the pups to be switched in HB/parallel HB/coil cut pairs.
